Swapping Media HDDs... Newb question

I have a 250GB seagate barraaccuuddaa (sic) that i would like to ghost/copy all the data off of, onto a new hdd. i plan on getting a 500gb hdd, but i would like to keep all the data i have. What is the easiest/safest way to do this?

i know this is a basic question, but after searching through here, i havn't found anything...

any help is appreciated
 
You've got quite a few options

1) Acronis True Image/Norton Ghost, commerically available utilities for copying drives.

2) Setup software that comes in drive retail kits or from the drive maker's website. Pop a CD in and boot from it, then you should be able to copy your old drive to your new one/

3) If the drive is just holding files (not your OS or programs drive) you can just copy and paste in Windows or 'dd' in Linux.

Now is an excellent opportunity to consider backup options, like making your old drive an external USB drive that you connect and update periodically, then store in a safe place, or using a CD/DVD burner to make copies of really important stuff.

so do i have to format the new drive when i get it? i plan on ghosting the old drive (seeing as that is an option :D) How would i go about ghosting it? just plug in the new drive, format it (in windows... dos... help??) and run the program?

help me more... i'm very new to this (obviously)

Only drive bigger than 500GB is the 750GB Seagate. I'm not a fan of it, as it's very loud and runs pretty hot. In the 500GB even space, I like the WD drive, although Seagate and Hitachi are here too. The WD drive is the cheapest and will run the coolest, the Seagate has the longest warranty, and the Hitachi delivers the best application level performance. If the drive is just going to hold movies and the like, I'd go with the WD5000KS. It's $208 shipped on ZZF right now.

If you use Ghost or something similar, you shouldn't need to format. The imaging program will create a file system automagically.
 
yeah, i've been looking at the WD 500 hdd, but i saw the barraccudda (500GB) for about $20 more on ZZF. i don't know if the barraccudda is worth the extra $$$ tho. I really only use my 250gb barraccudda for my downloads, music, and movies...
