i have some swans d1080mkII coming in the mail and i plan on ordering a sub to go with them since theyre only 2.0. the sub i have in mind is the polk psw10 from newegg for $117. im really not too sure on how to hook up the sub directly to the speakers, i dont really plan on using a reciever considering the swans are active and id rather save the space. heres a link to the layouts to the speakers and the sub.

thanks in advance, any help is welcome.

I believe you just take an RCA cable from the speakers to the sub's LINE IN ports.

decided to switch my mind to the dayton 10" sub. then i believe i can do the 3.5->rca from the computer to the sub-in rca and the sub-out rca to the swans. am i correct in this?

i have an x-fi xtreme music card. i believe all i need to buy is an rca to rca cable if what i think i can do is correct. the swans come with all audio cables needed to connect them to the computer, so i just need something to connect them to the sub. does anyone know if what i plan on doing is correct using the dayton 10" sub? its this one if anyone was wondering.

ok, i cant really look at the card now because my desktop is at my apartment and i'm at home for the next few days, but here is the layout of the card i got from creative.

Line Out 3 jack Connect the following inputs on powered analog speakers or a home theater receiver to this jack:
On 5.1 systems: Front Center and Subwoofer
On 6.1 systems: Front Center, Subwoofer and Rear Center
On 7.1 systems: Front Center, Subwoofer and Side Left

Line Out 2 jack Connect the following inputs on powered analog speakers or a home theater receiver to this jack:
On 4.1, 5.1 and 6.1 systems: Rear Left and Rear Right
On 7.1 systems: Rear Left, Rear Right and Side Right

Line Out 1 jack Connect the Front Left and Front Right inputs on powered analog speakers or a home theater receiver to this jack. You can also connect your stereo headphones with a 3.50 mm (1/8-inch) plug to this jack.

i'm assuming i can connect the sub to the line out 1 jack and the swans to the line out 1 jack then? using the rca to 3.5mm adapter of course. also is there any reason your recommending that sub over the dayton? all ive really read is that the dayton is great for the price and i cant really find out about shipping on the tsc website so im assuming id be getting an 8" sub for the price i could get a 10" or 12" dayton.

Unless you have a big room, the 8" will actually do better in a small space. The Daytons are good. They just tend to be more boomy than fast, tight and articulate.

Audio advisor has energy 8" subs for $88 + shipping. That is a $300 sub normally! It is the one I wanted to link you to originally. Their website was down or I could not connect at the time.

alright, ill go with the asw-8 sub then considering its going to go in my room in my apartment which is about 10'x12' or something. also, its 88.88 without free shipping and the other is 99 with free shipping, ill check to see what the better deal is when i actually check out. but thanks a ton, ill let you guys know how it goes and post pics :)

My sub finally came and I decided to just hook it up with a Y-connector with the Swans. It wouldn't let me connect it through the sub/center out on my soundcard or motherboard sound. But the sound is still amazing. All I can say is that this kicks the hell out of my Z-5500s. I'm very impressed.

That config should sound the same as if you used the x-fi connectors. I forget the fix for that issue but who cares right?

That setup cost about the same as the 5500s and besides the lack of surround it sure will make the 550ss sound tinny and flabby at the same time lol.

Glad it worked out for you.

If you get a Y-Connector from your computer output (RCA Output, no sub out) to powered speakers and the energy sub, does that reduce the power/volume of the speakers overall?

I would imagine it does, but I'm not sure, nor do I know how much it'd reduce the sound levels by... I could increase the volume and all that, but just want an idea of what happens and how big of an issue it might be, if at all

I already said it doesn't. Unless the system is very high end you will not be able to perceive the difference which is almost nothing.
