Not sure if this is old news or not...

But if you're planning to get any kind of retail molex pin extractor, do NOT get SVC's "universal" extractor.

It seems to work ok for female pins, but it will destroy your male pins. I purchased this item from SVC a little while ago to replace my homemade extractors, thinking it would be nice to have one tool for both types of pins.

Don't know what I was thinking, cause it's crap  SVC seriously needs to stop advertising it as a universal extractor...

Thanks for the head's up about that. I'm sure that it will help others who plan to purchase that product.

Well I bought one universal (male/female) molex extractor from FrozenCPU and it works fine. That thing makes me wnna sleeve wire I can see in my case.

the "universal" extractor at frozencpu looks like the same one sold at SVC.

I don't see how it could possibly extract male pins without causing damage to at least one side of the locking wings. It's just too big to depress them properly.

Kinda funny that they choose to show the female pin being extracted in the video for the "universal" extractor

Yes sometimes I bent one wing and thats it. I take them off carefully I don't know about you...maybe too much force? or you are really forcing it. And I used that extractor in two of my PSU and the fansss I have.

I never force a pin (have not extracted a single male pin yet with this universal piece.... it simply doesn't work and I will never force a pin). If you're forcing it, you're bending something. So don't roll your eyes at me, skippy :p

You should also notice that the universal extractor won't even go all the way down to the bottom of the plastic when trying to use it on a male pin.

Could you do me a favor and try to measure how many millimeters the diameter is on your extractor?

Oh well sorry for the rolling eyes if it doesn't work for you ok I understand, but for me it works really fine and about the measurement I guess they are all universal and have same size. And for removing the ATX(intel) 6 pin and 20 pin I used two strip of staple.

I got my extractor from RAtshack.
Works fine.

Just need something now for the ATX pins

That's why I'd like someone to measure the diameter of their universal extractor.

Who knows, maybe SVC has some "female only" extractors mixed in with their universal ones. The diameter on mine looks to be around 2.5mm

The diameter of the male pins look to be just under 2mm. The female pins are just under 2.5mm

If that's the case, the univeral is about 20 to 25% too big to be effective, and possibly too small for the female adapters (too MUCH bending versus too little)

you...really thought itd work on male pins?

ive ALWAYS used a pin for those, its not exactly difficult

I didn't know if it would or not. It's advertised as being universal and extracting both male and female.... so you'd assume that they wouldn't just outright lie to you.

And no... using a pin or paperclip isn't hard, but I may be sleeving a dozen power supplies shortly and it's nice to have a real tool that does it quickly and with a minimum of effort.

At least this might help those who are considering buying a universal extractor and have not removed pins before.

my friend messed up his male molex's too with a "universal" extractor. Needles work best for the males

i have one from svc and it works fine.....

yes, it does bend pins if ur not careful, but other than that it does its job

Sounds like the females need a fancy tool to get off while the males can get off with anything lying around the house ;)

I have a universal one from FrozenCPU and it destroys the male pins...

That pissed me off.
