Anyone ever build an harddrive cage that was suspensioned? I wanna make my own case, and my own harddrive cage that is suspended with some form of shock absorbers. And make some window in the case that allow you to see the harddrives stacked in the cage.

*Dont mean to use 1 hd, Ive got currently 5, and 2 extra's coming up  . (spafe is great)

What do i use best? Springs? Or rubber dangly things?

I did this, and it works. It's hanging off four 1/2 inch log rubber bands, which are also 1/2 inch wide.

works like a charm, although I always wedge the HD cage against the side of the case with a block of styrofoam before transporting the box. You never know which shock causes the head crash.

but with 7 HDs spining up all at once when you start the system you'dbetter leave at least two inches room on evry side of the HD cage, in case it swings.

ps: I have 4 HDs in there. Total 320 GB, all @ 7200 rpm.

it cust the vibration from the HDs down to nearly zero, and the noise drops noticably with the case open. It's a soundproofed case, so you can't hear shit except for a slight sound from teh PSU fan, but case open you can hear the difference.

I can't imagine them swinging more than a fraction of an inch when they spin up, have you actually seen that happen?

nah, we're talking about stuff for multiple (7) HDs. These commercial things would cost too much, so it's gotta be ghetto.
