I've read in a couple of guides on quieting down computers that isolating your hard drives from the case lowers the noise level significantly. I've been trying to think of a good way to accomplish this... Mainly a sort of web of somme kind of rubber or silicon tubing, or something...

This has probably been done before, so... Anyone do it? Suggestions as to materials, etc?

I have mine suspended between 2 sets of 2 pieces 1/3 inch strips of elastic for each HDD

no vibration, works well
 
Well, way back in the "olden days" :rolleyes: , when I was in the navy, they would mount most of the machinery on rubber shock mounts, which also cut down a LOT on the amount of noise/vibration that would be transmitted to the ship's hull. I imagine the same thing would hold true here.

I've seen retail products that use rubber mounts/slings/whatever to mount the hard drives, but have never worried much about the hdd noise, so have never checked them out. One of the advantages to hearing loss is that noise doesn't bother you nearly as much as other people!! ;)

I bet if you got some 3/4" or 1" plastic tubing (check hardware stores or plumbing supply places), you could cut it just a little longer than the distance between the mounting holes, run screws thru it into the hdd chassis, then use short (1/2" long or less) # 6 screws to mount the tubing to the 5.25" bays. Then you have tubing between the hdd chassis and the case, with no screws going from one to the other directly.

Does that make any sense to you, or will I have to draw you a drawing?? Hopefully I've explained it well enough. :cool:
 
makes sense. I think i'm going to try my hand at custom fabricating something in the case i'm working on - I'll probably use something similar to the tubing approach you described
 
I've got my hard drive mounted to a bracket which has adhesive backed velcro on it to attach to the case. The velro is plenty strong enough to hold, and it actually suspends the hard drive. The way the fibers lock together prevents the bracket from making contact with the case.
