Survey: Your Ideal Business Laptop

A group of ThinkPad users is conducting the above survey about which features are important to us in a business-class laptop. A major goal of the survey is to show Lenovo that there are many of us who would like ThinkPads with better screens. The survey is the first step of a plan that could result in Lenovo building such Thinkpads.

You're welcome to take the survey whether or not you care about premium screen options for your next ThinkPad. Please tell us which features are important to you.

Thanks for your help! :)

Updated survey results are here.

Submitted my answers ;)

All I can say is NO GLOSSY SCREENS. Uggh, must be matte as glossy just sucks.

But I wouldnt mind a higher res and brighter screen at times, though my T61 is adequate 95% of the time.

I would accept glossy if it was controlled like old CRT's use to be. (unlike apples mirrors)

but, only in trade for s-ips screen would i take gloss.

5 things for me:

1st Build Quailty
2nd Keyboard Quailty
3rd Battery Life
4th Thinklight from the old days
5th non glossy, non TN based screen

I filled it out yesterday. I hope we can get IPS panels back!

Poor build quality, it's not a real Lenovo. Not lightweight, it's staying home too often. Low battery life, I can't use it when I need it. Bad screen, I can't see my work.

Usability, usability, usability. People generally buy Lenovo because they want a tool, not a toy.

Hi All,

As of this morning, July 17, 444 people have returned surveys. Thank you!

Lenovo marketing and product managers are following the survey results... and they want to see more! They would like us to collect 500 surveys before analyzing the results in detail and deciding how to move on to the next phase.

We are so close! If you haven't already, PLEASE take few minutes now to fill out a survey. This is an excellent chance to add your voice to those requesting better
screens, and other features, in future ThinkPads. Please also share the survey URL with your colleagues and friends who use ThinkPads or other business-class or workstation-class laptops, like Dell Latitudes, Precisions, etc.

For those who have already filled out a survey, THANK YOU!!! Your time and thoughtful comments are MUCH appreciated, and should help Lenovo to produce ThinkPads that we want to buy.

Thanks again! :)
Frank

I filled it out when you first posted this.

Just thought I'd mention that I've since replaced my T61p with a W500.

So far: no real noticeable drop in weight, thought I can see small things they did to drop it. I actually got one of that "bad" NMB keyboards that have the weight reduction thing done to it, but it still types as good as my old T61p Chicony.

Screen, I went down from an LG WUXGA to an LG WSXGA+. Won the panel lottery there, this screen is brighter, and colors are even better than what I was ecstatic with on the WUXGA. Even the speakers seem somehow better

Everything feels more solid...and I love it.

Hope they'll let us vote on the popular ones. I don't want some idiot who thinks we need glossy screens to ruin it for the rest of that prefer to actually see our screens.

Super! Thanks for filling out a survey, batteriesnotincluded. :)

Glad to hear your upgrade from T61p to a W500 has gone so well. ThinkPads are still some of the best notebooks around, IMHO. Doesn't mean they can't get even better! ;)

One of the ideas of the survey is to gather a consensus of what most ThinkPad users are looking for. So far, only a few people have asked for glossy screens, most everybody wants matte. To be fair, if you use your computer almost exclusively in a darkened room (man cave?!) one could argue that glossy is superior. It's not so much that one answer is always the best, but which answer works best for most of us: matte. (Or glossy with true anti-reflective coating, which would probably cost much more than most of us are willing to pay.)

Anyway: THANK YOU again for filling out a survey. It's very good to have a definite goal of (at least) 500 surveys returned: they have been rolling in tonight! :)

THANKS ALL,
-Frank

I'm using the T400 with the high nit screen. I like it, wish the res was a bit higher though. I think that screens are a big selling point. I also like that it's not a high gloss screen.

Hi BrotherLen,

Thank you very much taking the survey! :)

The High Nit screen is getting rave reviews from other users too. It could well be Lenovo's "sleeper screen": IMO they should more heavily advertise its good viewing angles and contrast ratio. It would be great if they could make other ThinkPads (like T500) with a similar screen.

Glad you're enjoying yours!

Best regards,
Frank

They'd get far more buyers not from advertising it, but from offering it in WSXGA+. I'd have paid twice what I'd pay to upgrade to WUXGA. \

1280x800 is fine in 12", but in 15.4", I need more.

Took the survey, I want to see matte screens and switchable graphics on business-class laptops, and at a somewhat affordable price.

Survey ends Wednesday, 7/29 at 06:00 EDT
*** 6 days left to fill out a survey! ***

Update:

Forum members responded so quickly to my 7/17 post that it took only a single day to reach our goal of 500 surveys returned! As of this morning we have 631. A big THANKS to each of you who filled out a survey! :)

We want to collect as many surveys as possible, because it appears that Lenovo will judge the seriousness of the results at least in part by the raw number of surveys returned.

At the same time, the survey has now been running for 42 days, and we're eager to move on to the next step. Doing so requires Lenovo to analyze the results and decide how they'd like to proceed. They're waiting to do this until the final results are in.

And so we've decided to end the survey on Wednesday, 7/29 at 06:00 EDT. That leaves a little less than a week to fill out a survey if you haven't already!

Please share the survey URL with your colleagues and friends who use ThinkPads or other business-class or workstation-class laptops, like Dell Latitudes, Precisions, etc.

Thanks for your help,
-Frank

My suggestion was to put better graphics in their 14 inch laptops. An HD 3650 in a T400 would rock.

A member of the AnandTech forum where I've posted the survey brought up IBM's old TrackWrite / butterfly keyboard, now on display at MoMA.

Today's widescreen notebooks have more space for larger keyboards, so we probably won't be seeing another butterfly keyboard anytime soon. Another AnandTech member said the sliding mechanism was finicky anyway, so might be just as well. But, it's still a cool design. Thought people here might appreciate it like I do. :)

As of this morning, 693 people have returned surveys. Thank you! And please keep 'em coming!

-Frank

Boom. Done.

I think on the smaller laptops (I prefer 12-13" ones), a better resolution would be great. I would like to have multiple things up at once. I realize though, that many buyers might be older, and therefore have a hard time reading the screen at that size.

I would like switchable graphics though, that would be awesome.

I just got an X200s with LED backlight. It is great for brightness, but it is the worst screen I have ever laid my eyes on. This is my 3rd ThinkPad.

Thanks for filling out surveys guys! :)

It ends tomorrow (July 29) at 6 AM EDT. Last chance, if you haven't yet filled one out:
http://www.kwiksurveys.com/online-survey.php?surveyID=IONKF_a68057ef

739 people have returned surveys as of this morning. We're on pace to hit 750, 50% more than Lenovo requested. :)

After the survey ends it will likely take several weeks for Lenovo to analyze the results and decide how they'd like to proceed. I'll keep you posted about significant developments.

THANKS AGAIN for all your help!
-Frank

About the survey:

It is being conducted by a group of ThinkPad enthusiasts, as the first step of a plan to try to convince Lenovo to build us a ThinkPad with a better screen. (Better in the sense of wider viewing angles, more accurate color, and possibly higher resolution.) Please fill out a survey even if you're satisfied with current screens: it's an opportunity to tell Lenovo what other features are important to you.

Please share the survey URL with your colleagues and friends who use ThinkPads or other business-class or workstation-class laptops, like Dell Latitudes, Precisions, etc.

Survey results are kept here:

NOTE:
LENOVO IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SURVEY in any way except:
- They allow me to post the survey link and results in their online forum.
- ThinkPad product and marketing managers will be looking at the results. There are no promises of any particular actions. We will see!
