I've got some trouble with my 5.1 surround system.

The 5 smaller speakers are all connected correctly to the subwoofer (green, blue, grey, white and red wires), and the subwoofer has got 3 other wires (green, yellow and black) connected to my computer.

The ports on the subwoofer (green yellow and black) are front, centre/bass and rear respectively. There's one port with no wire, and it's the 'stereo' speaker, and the colour is also a green socket (same colour as the 'front' port).

The problem is that when I play my music, the sound either comes out from just one speaker, or from just 2 speakers (depends if I play around with my wires).
I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Everything is according to the colour, and to the manual.

If I go into my control panel and press 'test', sound comes out from each of the 5 speakers, and from my subwoofer, so they're actually working. It's just that when I actually play my music that they don't play all together.

Anyone know why or what I can do to fix this? Thank you.

I just checked, and found that there is sound coming out from the:

Centre
Left
Right
Rear Left
Rear Right

Sound is not coming out from the:

Side Right
Side Left
Subwoofer

.... when playing a music file. I just tried a video file, and everything works. Even the bass.

If I do a 'test' in the control panel, sound comes out of all the speakers. I'm sure they're all actually working (i.e. nothing is broken).

I'm also using the VLC player to listen to my songs. In audio channel or audio device I don't get a 5.1ch option unless I'm playing a video.

I only get choices from: Left, Right, Reverse Stereo (and Dolby Surround if I force dolby surround, but it doesn't make a difference). In audio device I get a choice between stereo and mono, also no visible difference between each other. - when playing a music file.

you do realize that you're playing stereo content on a multi-ch system, and its doing exactly what its supposed to be doing and reproducing stereo as stereo, right?
 
No, I don't realise that. How so?

Funnily enough, if I 'loose' the centre/bass wire, there's bass in my music now. Electro/techno sounds really bad if there's no bass.
 
how is this not making sense?
you're playing stereo music, as in 2.0, as in two channels, as in left and right
your audio system is doing what its supposed to be doing

if you want noise on all channels, you need something that resamples, like CMSS or Pro Logic II
 
Try to play your music with foobar2000 and the channel mixer extension.

Right now, you may have a 5.1 setup, but you are playing music recorded in stereo (2.0) format. In this case, only the 2 fronts will receive signal.

Obobski, the subwoofer should ALWAYS be working, shouldn't it? No matter what sound you're playing or where you're playing it from, as long as there are frequencies in that sound in the subwoofer range, the sub should kick in. Right?

no...

the subwoofer will only work if there is something re-directing bass frequencies, most software driver packages for cheap onboard won't bother with this because again, it isn't resampling channel mapping, stereo is stereo, 5.1 is 5.1, and so on

so unless the subwoofer unit itself has a crossover built in, no, it will not "always" work, it has to be mapped

why the concept of stereo to stereo and 5.1 to 5.1 is so elusive is beyond me, and why everyone assumes that "correct" is to have all speakers making noise is equally baffling
 
...because I have no clue whatsoever how speakers work. I only know I want my electronic music coming out of all the speakers, and making use of the subwoofer.

It's working now thanks to noxlord anyway!

I did explain to you a few times why it wasn't "working" (I should say: doing what you expected), and what would be required to accomplish this...:rolleyes:

well, as long as you're happy with what you've set up
