Hey guys, I'm currently using the onboard sound from my Gigabyte P35-DS3L board. I have the Logitech Z-680 5.1 speakers. I can't seem to get surround sound from streaming sites such as YouTube. When I had my Audigy Card this wasn't a problem. Some movies in Windows Media Player don't seem to work in surround sound either. I have made sure windows know it has 5.1 speakers in the control panel>audio section. Is there some codec I'm missing or something? All help is appreciated. Thanks.

How are you connected, digital or analogue?

Well its not connected optically. I just use the green, yellow and black wires to my card.

When you install the driver, it should also install an application to set it up, see what that has to offer.

I've used that program to set everything up correctly. It just seems to be with streaming sites that it doesn't support surround sound.

Try ffdshow, its a complete audio/video codec replacement but it does not change any codecs you currently have installed and you can still use them as before if you wish.
If you uninstall ffdshow, you will be returned back to how things were.

When you install, it will give you a big list of applications that you can let it use/work with or you can select to allow any.
If it doesnt work and you are unsure of the codec, try allow any or change the Codec config manually to find the right codec
(I didnt see iTunes on the list but I'm not sure of the name of the executable it needs to know.)

It is extremely configurable you can do a ton of things with it you might be surprised :)
If you tick the Dolby Decoder box it will put the front sound to the rear speakers as well (with a tiny delay should you wish if your rear speakers are closer to your ears or you want an echo effect).
Hopefully this will do what you need.

Get the latest beta, the stable version is a bit old now.

I'm starting to assume that its a hardware limitation due to RealTek's weak sound controller program. On my old rig, the Creative Audigy card worked perfectly. As it is right now, a new codec pack that I installed got the surround sound working for all the movies I have and games I play in surround sound. But for streaming sites such as YouTube everything I've tried is unsuccessful. Even the FFDSHOW that you suggested. One of my friends said that sites such as Youtube audio is 2 channel so it wouldn't work. But my other friend who has an Audigy card said that all 5 speakers were working for him so I'm starting to assume that its a problem with the RealTek hardware.

Its how the driver was written, the hardware is clearly capable of using all speakers at once.
You may want to drop a line to the motherboard mfr to see if they have a remedy.

Yup, I've emailed Gigabyte. Now let's see how good they are with tech support. Thanks for all your help Nenu.
