Surround Sound Issues

The problem here is that my dad isin't getting dolby surround out of his dvd player. There is a digital coax connection between the player and the reciever, and i'm sure the reciever supports dolby 5.1 because i play on the same system with my xbox with an optical connection, and a dolby indicator light comes on. My guess is that the reciever just doesn't like coax connections, but my knowledge of home theaters is a LOT less than of computers, so any help would be really great. Thanks in advance. :)
 
Make sure the dvd he is playing has a 5.1 track and that it is selected. Also make sure the dvd is set to output a 5.1 stream.
 
The dvd has dolby 5.1 and the dvd player is set to output 5.1. Also the same dvd when put in the xbox works fine audio wise. :(
 
double check to make sure the digital coax connection on the dvd player is set properly? It might be tryign to use a built in decoder and jsut passing stereo through the digital coax port. see if you can turn off any internal decoding so that the reciever can deal with it instead.
 
After spending 20 minutes screwing around with with the settings on the dvd player, it works, thanks for the help. :)
