So since Doom 3 is gonna be using 5.1 audio and I have a Audigy 1 (gamer) I figure I'll be
able to get a better Doom 3 (or porno) experience at night, but I dont want to disturb the rest of the
family.

So I was wondering what were the really good ones and what could be ok for the time being.

-Thank You.

whatever you do, don't buy into the whole "5.1 headphone" crap. buy a good set of sennheisers or something like that.

I have a pair of those and they sound fine to me, but I haven't ever heard true sound either I guess. I should be getting some Klipsch 5.1 Ultra's in any day now though, but now that I have started reading the Audio part of the forums I am really doubting myself about my Zalman 5.1's....I bought them for only $35 shipped. Would the sound really sound that much better with a high-dollar pair of headphones

Whatever you end up doing, don't buy those lame 5.1 headphones. They are just a gimmick, with subpar sound quality and design.

That, and they certainly don't have a subwoofer on them, that would really add to listener fatigue if that was strapped to your head =]

All headphones are surround headphones, less you break them in half and stick both drivers on the same ear.

Do yourself a favor and do not buy any headphones that feel the need to put 'surround' anywhere in their description.

Hmm...pr0n in surround sound...I think that would terrify me.

:D That's the best argument I've heard so far.

Get some regular headphones. Have you ever noticed how a lot of software has a headphone audio setting? That's for using with headphones. Don't go getting any of these "5.1" headphones. Just get some regular headphones and set your software to headphones.

Once you listen to a nice set of hi-fi speakers, you'll get a grip on what good headphones should sound like too...well minus the wide soundstage...that is the weakness of headphones, but that is why there is a headphone setting for your soundcard.
