Surprising console noise comparison..

Haha...I have all 3 as one or two other people in this thread and the Xbox360 is by far the loudest....

I have 3 xbox 360's in my house right now...and they are far the loudest console. And actually I have never heard my wii make a noise...ever. I didn't think they even made noise. The PS3 is also whisper quiet also, I rarely ever hear this. The thing I love about it is, if it gets really hot it will turn up the fans to Max power. And I know I need to shut down the console and let it sit.

You don't really need to turn off your 360 because of that... you're probably not hearing the fans either, but the DVD drive.

I've put my ear up to the wii in the middle of TP and barely heard anything?

Maybe my ears are just bad?

i was playing COD3 on my wii last night.. i really didn't hear anything..

the only time i hear noise out of the wii.. is when i quit a game.. i hear some sort of click, and somehint win down.. but it's like got 1 second..

Yeah, I think the click is a noise from the drive when the system resets. Other than that, I don't think I've ever heard my Wii.

Odd, my wii sounds a lot like my gamecube, with the strange sector seeking noises. Other than that, can certainly hear the fans... but maybe I'm just sensitive.

The only time I hear my Wii is when I first pop a game in.

After that, the sound from my speakers drowns out any noise it makes.

I only have experience with the 360 and my Wii, so these are my thoughts:

Wii - Without a disc in it, its almost inaudible. I believe its almost quieter than my Powermac G4 Cube, which is fanless. You would not be able to tell this system was powered on by listening to it. The Wii is by far the quietest fan based console ever made, but only WITHOUT a disc in it.

Once you put a disc in it, things do change. However, I noticed that a lot depends on the game itself. The Wii's DVD drive isn't terribly loud. However, it does NOT handle off balanced discs well. For example, I noticed that while my Wii Sports disc didn't make a big difference in sound, Zelda made my Wii vibrate like crazy, making a horribly loud sound. If you look closely at the Zelda disc, there is a lot more ink on one side of the disc than the other. This causes the disc to spin slightly off balance, making it vibrate. The console itself is still very quiet, but the sound of the Wii vibrating against the piece of furniture its sitting on can make huge racket.

Xbox 360 - There is no doubt about it, this console is loud. The two fans at the rear of the system are loud and pump out a TON of heat, even when the system isn't doing anything and just sitting in the menu. The disc drive in my 360 is even louder, and makes a very loud woosh sound. Its never high pitched or annoying, but its loud enough to always be noticeable and can be distracting.

However, most people seem to overlook the fact that not only does the 360 itself have fans in it, but the POWER BRICK also has a fan! And a loud, high pitched whiny one at that! If you truly want to measure the sound output of the 360, you need to include the power brick as well.
