well, my backups increased 10gb for a small company over 2 days last week. and i found the culprit

how can i find out what is in these files so i know if they are safe to delete or not?

You can use the "file" utility. It's available on many Linux bootcd's, or it's probably in cygwin.

Is it a good idea to have backups using NTFS compression?

Serious question..

Dunno, but I never said my company was smart either (nor is it very rich).
