surprise! 680i no power

got my 680i LT (eVGA) today. i originally purchased it based just off of features, didnt read any reviews (that was a mistake). now the board will not power on at all. i get a steady blue light when the power supply is on. i am sure everything is hooked up right (i do this for a living). specs in sig.



anyone had luck reversing this issue? or do i go ahead and get an RMA number from newegg?
 
When my 680i died it still spun the fans up. I was wondering if it is doing that and possibly what the post code was. The one that died, the post code was --. When my rmaed board stopped working for no reason, it hung on the c1 error. I had to remove the cmos battery to get it to post again. I guess you need to double check all connections and make the power button is attached. I have forgotten that. Good luck
 
The 680i is shit, if its still within the return period get a refund and if you MUST have sli get a 780i. My 680i just burned up last weekend and rather than bothering with an RMA im just doing the upgrade through evga to the 780i.
 
Even Dan_D was having issues with the 680 series, seems this board has already out lived its usefulness.

I wanted to upgrade my mobo but I like to wait and see how it holds up to our Torture squad!!!
 
i fucked up.. plugged the power switch into some other connection that is where the power switch usually goes, but the ACTUAL power switch was in a diff place on the board... fixed that, and so far so good now.
 
Glad to hear you got it running and I would start saving now so you can get a replacement when it dies. Also glad to hear I'm not the only one who screws up the power button connection, lol.
 
I agree with the 680i = shit comment. I'm doing the EVGA upgrade in Jan to the 780i. Depending on how that works, I'll either keep it, or sell it and get an x38 board.

Most people can't get past 450fsb on the 680i's. which is right where I'm stuck at as well. I also have that issue with my CPU that it doesn't like the 9x multi past a certain speed...change it to 8x and crank the fsb and I can get to 3.6Ghz no problems. no way i can hit that speed with 9x though. Not sure if it's the board or cpu causing that.

On the other hand, I have a friend with a 680i as well and he loves it. He doesn't overclock though, just runs everything stock.

It's a problem with the 680i SLI. All other 600 series chipsets including the 680i LT seem to be no more problematic than anything else.

I think the 680i LT is the way to go. Dual x16 support and none of the problems the 680i SLI seems to be famous for.
As I've said, the 680i LT should never be discounted. It's 90% of what the 680i SLI is and overclocks just about as well.
I've only fried the one set of modules, so I've been lucky so far. No problem with D9's.
The 680i LT and 680i SLI overclock about the same.
 
I was able to run my q6600 g0 up to 4050 using a 9x multi, so it might be your chip. I kept it humming along at 3.6ghz 24/7 until the board fried on me. I WANT to like nvidia boards because of the SLI, but if i have even the slightest hint of problems when i get my 780i board, its getting RMA'd and ebay'd and i'm going x38 with 2 3870s and nvidia will lose another customer.
 
very well could be my chip...but still...3.6Ghz is nothing to sneeze at on a quad core. Although I really do think it's the board causing the limitation. It's doing 3.6Ghz right now on 1.38v. I'll be finding out in Jan though after I do the upgrade to the 780i. I'm in the same boat though...any problems and I'm dumping the nvidia chipset and going x38.

Yes I have. Though the overclocking sucks, the one I keep coming back to is the Striker. I've got the same one from over a year ago and it works flawlessly as long as I don't overclock very high or take the RAM past about 1,000MHz DDR2.

Well with dual core processors I've had several 680i SLI boards go well past 500MHz. With quad core CPUs I haven't made it past 450MHz either. However you don't really need high FSB speeds to get good overclocks on your Q6600 or similar chips. 450x9=4050MHz. That's not going to happen on a B3 or even a G0 stepping Q6600. Especially not on air. Water perhaps, but I bet few will be able to do it. 3.6GHz seems to be the upper limit of these things. Dropping the multiplier and increasing the FSB speed won't actually gain you very much over a lower FSB speed and higher multiplier in terms of real world performance. So unless you are just an absolute benchmark whore it really isn't worth while.

Then you are lucky. Most chips I've seen won't do that stable. What kind of cooling are you using?

I understand completely. I've been so ready to buy a X38 Maximus Formula on so many occasions. I'm quite sick of the bullshit with the 680i SLI boards. I'll be trying the 780i SLI and hopefully it will be better. I love the power of multi-GPU setups, but I want a machine that works more than anything. It doesn't matter how fast it is if the damn thing isn't reliable. So if I need to grab 3 3870's and an X38 to get that, so be it. Though I would really rather not.

Actually my chip won't go past 378x9. However if I drop the multiplier I to 8x, I can go all the way to 450x8 to hit 3.6ghz. 1Mhz more than 450 and I get constant reboots no matter what voltage I throw at it. However, if i jump a few mhz I can run 466x8 and get 3.7Ghz out of it...which requires a little more voltage (1.43v) but seems to run a lot hotter than 3.6ghz, so I stick to 3.6 until I order some good stuff for watercooling around feb/march. But it seems something about my system doesn't like the 9x multi, because if I drop it to 8x i can go a lot farther a lot more stable.
