I have been reading about the recent patches to Supremecommander (1.5, then 1.5.3.2 or something) and they are supposed to improve performance and add all sorts of cool sounding other stuff.

I have not bought the game, even since I got my new computer (the hardOCP multi-core review scared me away), how much have these patches improved your ability to increase detail settings and such?

The latest patch brings the game up to version 3220. I don't know where you got your numbers from. The only cool thing i see is the publisher removing SecureRom. That just freed one of my DVD drives.

Maybe other fixes were implemented before in previous patches although i'm too lazy to read every release note.

1.1.3251 is the newest. 3220 is two patches old IIRC.

3220 was a major patch at the end of fed IIRC
3223 was a fix for a couple really small issues caused by the 3220
3251 is the latest, which was "the april patch" and then "the may patch" and was finally released on the 23rd IIRC.

This patch adds significant balance changes, really bumps up performance (benefits decreasing with more hardware) for the low end computers. The patch also adds cartographic mode, a colorful, hardware friendly, and useful (especially for cybran T2 PD towers) for placing buildings. Think topo map, including elevation lines.
The patch has caused a few issues, but is without a doubt a major step forward for the game.
Give it a try.

Looks fairly familiar to my machine. You'll be able to play pretty much maxed out as much as youd like.
