Supreme Commander: First Impressions

50 nukes

Jesus christ...unbelievable. I'm still trying to make sure that my build order never chokes!!

The shift key turns out to be a life-saver...makes everything move much quicker and allows for so much more control. Only thing I have a problem with is that I can't figure out how to delete a shift-order...

Just a quick uber noob question from someone who hasnt played the beta or demos;

When zoomed out all the way, are the icons single units, squads or grouped untits?

 Yeah i know what they look like, I was more after what each one represents.

Seems like most of the people bashing the game after playing it for 15 min are all TOO used to C & C and SC games. You dont HAVE to go T3 To win, AT ALL! instead of spending all your resources trying to hit T3, build up a large T1/T2 army, and bring in constant attacks. Taking out a couple power generators before your troops die deals a very large blow to them trying to advance in tech levels.
I can make T3 in 15 min easy and start amassing the T3 robots by the twenties in a matter of minutes.
Dont treat this like just another same ol RTS controllable game, read up on the controls and figure out more of how the gameplay works. Theres so much more controllability in this than any other ive played before. again, you DONT NEED T3/EXPIREMENTAL TO WIN

QFT. The only reason to even tech to tier 3 is for fun because ur fucking around with the AI or ur in a stalemate.

 Yeah i know what they look like, I was more after what each one represents.

They have a icon symbolizing what they are. Its kinda hard to tell, but once you get familiar you will learn what they represent.

No that it isnt cool or anything, because it definatly is... But wouldn't more than a few nukes going off together prity much burn up/displace most of the air and water on the planet, set fire to the atmosphere and generaly f*ck everthing up beyond repair for the rest of the game?

... I know. I'm reading way to much into it. :p Can't wait for the Aus release!!

enough to build up 70 some odd nukes over 7 hours?!? lol, can tell your gonna have fun in 1 day. lemme guess, u preordered already!

I made the mistake of pre-ordering cuz D2D wasnt showing they were going to put it on their website.

DRATS (Im in alaska and the shipping for me to get it here cost alot more than if i would have just downloaded it from D2D)

tell me, how long does the longest build que take with 74 freakin T3 engineers?!?

idk i started building and found out about nukes prob @ hour 4, i was going mad and made spiderbots like crazy, then it was all about nukes from that point on, idk i can build 10 nukes, and prob 50 tech 3 engin in 2 hours tops :). so when u get the game remember u need power and mass to build those nukes and spiderbots ;)

bet you cant wait for the HUGE MONUMENTALLY LARGE maps to nuke everything and everyone, hell, i would even nuke myself!

lol yea, im @ 56.2% >.>, yea im a buy the game as well for multi :D. o yea i saw a cool map i would love to build nukes everywhere. lol i just builded 20 more nuke launchers and 10 more nuke subs, i already reached the 500 units limit tho :(. time to blow the enemy to hell :D

Now for your last trick, 300 nukes with the blast wiping out ur base:D

I tried playing that map again with everything on low. Started at 60 FPS, dropped to 30 FPS, then stayed at 10 FPS. It was playable, but not enjoyable.

I don't think even the fastest of today's computers can handle this map on highest settings. If this map really is Rhode Island in its entirety, then it's 4,001 square kilometers; in comparison, I believe the largest maps that are included in Supreme Commander are 81 sq. km.

E6600 @ 3 GHz
2GB DDR2 RAM @ 667 MHz
GeForce 7900GT @ 700/1600
320GB Seagate 7200.10 HDD
Dell 2005FPW monitor (1680x1050)

Game is amazing, I played it through the whole 3 or so months it was in Beta and loved it. It ran "okay" on my single core processor, now that I'm upgrading to an FX-60 I'm really looking froward to my retail experiences. This is probably the best RTS I have played since WCIII, SC, and TA, its just absolutely incredible and everything I ever wanted from an RTS. The maps are gigantic, and quite honestly the bigger the map the better, because then intelligence gathering and radar coverage/stealth end up becoming of very real strategic value. Oh Dual monitor support gets a big thumbs up from me.

This game is awesome. Sure you don't have to tech to t3 but whats the fun in that when you can't use all the units in the game...... I just started playing this game after gettin my copy and wow.....I picked the ai that tech to tier 3 and man he was sending spider bots on me an experimental units and I was pretty impressed. He decimated half my base lol... never had so much fun losing. :D

Sadly in the end it slowed my game down.....I must buy a dual core!

Goodness gracious, I thought this thing came out weeks ago in the US?

Does this mean the EU actually got a game the week before the US?

/swoons

Oh I bought it last week when it came out but only played for an hour or so. Looked very polished but I'm not touching it until the DX10 patch. Still very busy with WoW atm anyway and I'll wait for Vista performance to improve and the DX10 stuff to be available before I dip into it. It looked great at 2560x1600 and I can't say I had any issues identifying units at that resolution. This sounds like a game that was meant to scale up to today's high-end hardware with plenty of room for future upgrades as the mod-community grows and multiplayer becomes more widespread.

Who here is running this on WinXP SP2 with top end or upper end hardware?
Such as C2D, maybe 7900 or 8800 series card, etc.

Doesn't have to be top end, but close, and what is your play like?
I have been waiting for this game forever, but have not had a chance to play beta.
Basically I am waiting to upgrade to just play this game only, and do not want to over spend.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Also another question, how is the dual screen on the game working/handling? Those who are using it.

i see you are having trouble differentiating between 81 km squared, and 81 sq. km.

the largest map ix 81x81 km ... ie 6561 km^2

Thanks.

works great, you leave one zoomed out as a giant minimap, and one in to see what your doing

i frequently use the zoomed out for giving move commands and move ques. Im starting to get used to the rapid zoom feature more and using the main screen the zoom out and move. i really like the second monitor if nothing else to warn me when the enemy is on the move etc. I REALLY wish i could drag pieces of the HUD onto the second monitor since they are used less often. I dont find the HUD too big since its a 24" dell at 1920x1200 but i wish i could move them to second monitor

I would agree Dual monitor support works great, and that is exactly how I use it. One zoomed all the way out for unit movement and the other for build / close-up troop management. Sometimes I use the secondary monitor to zoom in so I can close up manage things in 2 places. My primary monitor is also a 24 Inch dell running that same resolution, but my secondary is a old 15" lcd running at 1024x768 and that is actually just fine for the secondary view.

If I had a few extra bucks as well as a card(s) that support dual monitor already, I would recommend getting it.. You can pick up used 17" and 19" monitors (Regular Monitors not LCD's) for under $50

I think this game should be used for cpu/gpu comparisons. I mean it is just that awome and I think [H] would be the best place for this to take place!

I would agree with aeon, it is definitely more cpu and memory intensive than gpu intensive. The models are relatively low detail, and the zoom keeps the top end poly count to a minimum. IE. zoomed in you will only see a few units in full detail while zoomed out you will see many units but in little (or no) detail. The only reason this won't run and geforce 2mx is the shader model 2.0 requirement.

In sharp contrast however the CPU usage is astronomical. Each unit in the game, whether they are on the screen or not, is running its own AI script at all times. at a top end of 8000 units in a game that is 8000+ lines of script code to process per frame (I have no idea how many lines must be processed to do something useful, but it is at least one per frame, likely a lot more). If you hope to achieve 60 frames per second you need to process at least half a million lines of script per frame (again, it is likely several times that). Note, this is NOT processor operations, each line of C code assembles to many lines of assembly code, and each line of assembly code can contain many processor operations (think about indirect addressing).

Memory is the same thing, for each unit in the game you need storage space in memory for the details of that object. Add to that the map data, 3D data, and texture data and this game will goble up 2gb no problem on a large map with lots of units.

In case anyone else is wondering: the game uses SecuROM as copy protection ``feature''. I am sad to see that, since I was really looking forward to playing this game.

It depends on your resolution. Most of the CPU calculations are not dependant on whats onscreen. Its all backup type stuff. So you can increase resolution or settings without taking a hit. But once you hit higher resolutions...
