as long as it's a "standard" module and nothing overclocked or with weird timings or voltages you should be ok. modules still have standards to conform to.
In your experience is it a poor choice to buy outside of the "tested" RAM list for your mobo?
I believe it is a poor choice to limit yourself to only the modules that they tested on a particular motherboard. If you want a good experience however remember to get standard ram with standard voltage and timings. I mean 1.5 V and DDR3 1600 or less although neither AMD nor Intel currently support this high of ram frequency DDR3 1600 generally is not that hard to get working.
Also remember if you plan on populating all slots you may have be forced to run your ram at DDR3 1333.

I need a RAM kit under a certian size, I found one but it isn't on the list provided by my mobo company as supported.
