supplying power to radeon 9800pro

i've been asking around, is it largely important how direct the power is fed to the card?

maybe i'm just conditioning myself, but I switched from the molex connectors that came with the card to a direct connection that's supplied by an Enermax Noisetaker 420W. the card seems to perform better under a "better" supply of power. Am i wrong in this observation?
 
Voltage across all parallel connections must be the same. i'm pretty sure all the voltage pins in the molex are in paralell with the main rail supply. i'd be surprised if you're getting different numbers consistently based only on that change. the voltage should be almost exactly the same regardless of which molex plug you use. also i don't think the card is going to perform differently even if the voltage were lower. as long as it's within a certain tolerance the card is going to get all the power it can use. it's not going to run faster if the voltage falls within the higher range of tolerance.

of course an easy way to find out objectively would be to run some benchmarks and see if your output corresponds to the change.
