Supid Question, 2.8E vs. 2.8C?

Hey, was just cruising around NewEgg, looking for a new P4, and I saw the 2.8E and 2.8C going for about the same price. More L1 cache, double L2 cache, smaller die size so probably less heat, the 2.8E sounded like a no brainer. Suspiciously like a no-brainer.

Since I've been out of the hardware scene for over a year, I must ask, are there any hidden advantages to a C over an E?

I won't be OCing, at least not seriously. I've got a nice heavy copper Zalman (at least it was nice two years ago), with a generic 120mm fan blowing over it right now on my current 2.53. When I touch the sink, it feels room temperature, so I guess it should be okay for a new CPU too.

nah, E is prescott and has a longer pipeline, 1 mb of L2 (right?) cache, 800mhz fsb, and HT like the C chips

in bechmarks the prescott and northwood are about the same. i would get a C becvuase you will run cooler, letting you overclock more withought fear of damage.

For the most part they perform about the same, if anything from what I've seen at the same speed the 2.8 C can be a bit faster than the E because of the shorter pipeline. The C also runs cooler, as mentioned already.

my bad about the 533. I thought the lower clocked prescotts were all 533.

The only Prescott that's 533MHz is the 2.4A. All the others are 800MHz FSB's and have HT like the Northwood. Whereas the 2.4A does not.

What sort of CPU speed is that heatsink rated to? The 2.8E has a TDP of 89W (69.7W for the 2.8C) - the same as a 3.4GHz Northwood. It should be fine though, I'm running the stock Intel cooler and TIM on a much hotter chip and it seems to be coping just fine.

Thanks for the comments everybody! I'll be shooting for the C then.

Sorry, you've deer-in-headlights'd me. I can't remember what model or anything, all I can remember is that it was heavy, something like 700g vs. the intel-spec maximum of 500g. But it seems much better than any of the stock hsfs I've seen, and if it's not, no worries, the stock hsf in the retail box will provide adequate cooling I'm sure.

Sounds like a 7000Cu. One of the better heatsinks out there, it should be find for your needs.

I am trying to make the same decision,

yeah the 2.8c is cooler, but will it oc as high as a presscott?

Current Prescott processors:

3.4E 800MHz bus, HT
3.2E 800MHz bus, HT
3.0E 800MHz bus, HT
2.8E 800MHz bus, HT
2.8A 533MHz bus
2.4A 533MHz bus

The 2.4A and (I guess) the 2.8A are very overclockable because of the 533MHz bus.
The 2.4A is good value because it is only 65% of the cost of the 2.8A.
