ok so I was trying to put the innards of a dell xps into a shallow depth rack case but that lead to many issues... so off to ebay... few glasses of wine later and seeing a bit fuzzy...

i found this deal and timer was running out quickly so not much time to research...

for $117 I still ended up with a supermicro case with 4 hotswap drives, 2 x xeon cpus and 6x4gb dimms...

anyway...

my thinking now that I notice this since I am on a monitor now (purchased via cell phone so smaller screen ... note 3..)

i see 2 issues
1. memory runs hot and has an alarm... converted to 261F !!!!!!!
2. 2.5ghz cpus running @ 1.9999ghz

so im going to wait for this to come in and first thing to do is reset bios... hope that does it for the cpu and memory issue... anyone see anything that also maybe contributing to it?
is the memory not good in that machine?

Looks alright. The CPU speed issue is probably either due to Speedstep or he has the wrong settings in the BIOS (might need a BIOS update as well). The memory temperatures are from having no air movement over the RAM at all according to those pictures. I don't see any fans at all in that chassis. Those CPUs and the RAM will need a decent amount of airflow to stay at normal temperatures (FBDIMMs run HOT HOT HOT).

well i am still going to try and fit this mobo into that rack case since it is more of a "clone" style mobo... and i have fans so will add them and get the flow better... plus this will be in my cool basement...

Looking at the pictures, I bet if you put in a cooler that blows sideways like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...3&cm_re=771_cooler-_-1DR-000Z-00025-_-Product and an exhaust fan in the 120mm slot you would be a lot better off. Maybe not worth the $$$ to buy new.

yeah with how the mobo is laid out i cant put cpu fans in... but thanks!

so I have placed the mobo in my shallow depth rack case and it is running. I got the heat alarm warnings and I put a room fan blowing into it and yes it stopped.

I need to measure the fan holes in the case and buy some fans...

machine is running server 2012r2 essentials right now just fine...

but that does bring up a good question on cooling. I will take pics to show and see what you guys think.

There is a large fan in the front... (intake?)
there are 2 small fan spots on the back (exhaust?)
there are 2 small fan spots on top (exhaust?)

that is really it but I figure i need to buy 4 small fans and get them plugged into the mobo for monitoring...
