I am seeing lots of 4U supermicro servers on ebay for less than $600. I want to buy something I can use as a media server but I am getting the "too good to be true" feeling.

Granted, the servers are older and showing signs of use and come with no drives but sill seems like a scam.

I have never bought used computers, servers or electronics off of ebay before. Is there something I should look out for? I am just looking for file servers so nothing fancy.
 
Seller feedback and thouroughly reading the item description. Don't buy from anyone with less than 100 ratings, all positive.
 
So what do I look for in terms of specs or features?

One of the listings I was looking at for a 847E1-R1400LPB said "3TB and 4TB Hard Drive may not be recognized by the backplane if fully populated". Does anyone who has a supermicro server know if this is true?

That's because the model you found has an old SAS1 expander (BPN-SAS-846EL1) in the backplane. You want to make sure to get one that has a SA2 expander (BPN-SAS2-846EL1) in the backplane.

I picked up a SC846E16-R1200B Supermicro 24 bay with the SAS2 expander on eBay for $220 a couple months ago and it's been excellent as my home file server. I only have it loaded with 12 4TB disks though. I just bought the case though because I already had modern, low power, and quiet server components to put in it.
 
Lots of us use the SM846 but they're not exactly in-room friendly without hacking them up, especially if something causes the fans to ramp up (ie: temp).

Most people will find a Rosewill 8 Hotswap 4U + Desktop sTyle PSU mcuh better to deal with, but if you need more drives the SM are nice.
 
I wouldn't buy from them with their ratings. I never buy unless it's 100% with good reviews. Ain't nobody got time for that!
 
I bought my media server off ebay a supermicro dual opteron 24 bay from a deal thread that was posted here awhile ago. As long as the seller has lots of feedback 500+ with 99% feed back it should be fine. Only issue was it is LOUD. Had to put it in the basement.

I made my SC846 in-room friendly. The hardest part was I did drill holes for new fans as the stock fan locations have no holes. I swapped out all the fans for Noctuas. Then I finally found one of the SQ model PSU's which is a must. Once I did thay my Radioshack DB meter at level 50 cant even pick up the noise from more then 9" away.

Also to OP there is a seller on ebay that sells the SC846 listed price is around 600$ has been known to take offers of 350$
 
There are a lot of supermicro servers on ebay for cheap but all have backplane variants like SAS846-7EL1, SAS-846TQ and SAS-846A/SAS-826A. Any servers I found that have a SAS2 or SAS3 backplane start at $2000.

Do you guys know where I can get cheap storage servers that support 4TB+ hard drives?
 
look up certifiedservers on ebay. they should have the 846 with sas2 backplane make an offer see if the accept
 
Check what they're asking for shipping. I've seen stuff that seems like a good deal then they want like $300 for shipping. Check that they come with rails and other accessories too. Trying to source out the proper rails, drive caddies, psu or other parts will end up costing more money and more hassle.

That's because you're in Canada and that's how much shipping really costs unfortunately. Just be glad you're not in Europe or Australia. I shipped one of the Supermicro 4Us to Denmark once and that was $800 before even taking any duty levied by customs into account. Shipping is usually about $60 if you're in the continental US for a 4U server.
