Super Micro Superchassis 512 noise?

Side note on that system: It requires DDR2 FB-DIMMs, which are pretty pricey if you're going to want to upgrade past the base 4GB.
 
I've got a SuperMicro 512L, and the PSU fan is pretty loud in it. It's not unbearable, but not something you'd want in a living area.

If the picture is true it has the 5100 board which uses registered ECC. The FB-DIMM MATX one has 4 slots.
 
Another one here with 512L. Blower fan is pretty quiet (and sound is smooth, after day or so i does not notice it), but PSU is really noisy, around 55dB if i can trust meter in my phone. Also it's different than blower fan, PSU's making high-freq noise which is very annoying.
 
The 10cm blower in this chassis is pretty loud and is said to cause disk problems because of the vibrations. All new chassis by SM have 2 of 3 40mm fans instead. I've had good luck with those, and they also seem a bit more quiet.
 
I just bought the next one up from Geeks.com (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=512F-280B-XQC186X2-2R) last week with the 8GB RAM. While a very good server and plenty powerful the fans were just down right unbearable. I tried every PWM control I could in Linux, Windows and ESXi and they would never drop below 9000 RPM. To get them to a bearable level I had to mod a molex to 3 pin adapter for 5volts which made them pretty quiet but the PSU fan is still a bit loud. A lot more bearable in the server rack in my office never the less. :) Hope this helps.

People need to keep in mind 1U servers cooling relies on pushing air through heatsinks.... small fans will always be loud.

I still remember those old IBM x335, sounded like an airplane..
 
I think the best solution is for me to buy a new house with a remote closet that I can store loud server equipment in LOL.
