I am contemplating building a micro form factor computer for my step-son. He has XP pro running on a Dell GX240 that I have 1GB DDR memory (max) and a 1.8Ghz P4 (2.0Ghz is max so it's not worth upgrading the proc), and an Jaton nVidia GeForce FX5200 video card I bought for it when I got it from work.
I'm looking for a very cheap setup, very small case, low power consumption.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mainly it will be used for old games like Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, web games like Club Penguine and Webkins websites, and eventually his homework.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
I'd like to try and do it for under $300, but the cheaper the better
3) Where do you live?
Illinois
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
proc, possibly ram (I have 2GB DDR2100 ram already), case (can I get something that will fit the Dell GX240 case and use it's PSU? It has the P4 power plug but not the 6 pin PCIe), I have a hard drive and an XP Pro 32-bit license already.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
If I can, I could reuse the Dell GX240 case and PSU, my 32-bit XP license, and my 2GB DDR2100 memory. If the motherboard has it, I could even use onboard video.
6) Will you be overclocking?
Most likely no
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Samsung 17" flat screen
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within the next couple months
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
I don't really need USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s or eSATA
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Windows XP 32-bit
