1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? Strictly Web Browsing

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? $250, tax and shipping included.

3) Where do you live? Cali

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

Their Dell motherboard just went out, it's downstairs, they want a small for factor Case.

I agree with bastage. All of the currently available Nvidia nForce chipset-based motherboards for AMD processors are now really outdated (in fact, the nForce 630a that's on that Gigabyte mobo is now almost four years old), and are less stable than those with AMD chipsets. This is because Nvidia has pretty much stopped development of new desktop core-logic chipsets at this point.
 
tommy13, I HIGHLY recommend you look up a program called 'nLite' and get the smartest computer geek you know to go through it and customize your WinXP install. You'll thank me later. :)

Read through the 'WinXP SP3 Service Config' and you'll be on your way in no time.
My custom WinXP SP3 install has all features but is streamlined. On a shitty 1 Ghz old-ass laptop, it only uses ~200 MB hard drive space for the OS install and only takes up ~25 MB of RAM when not running any programs. Considering the laptop only has 1 GB of DDR1 cheapo laptop RAM, this works wonders :)

I also would recommend if you all really don't need the latest features, ever consider a used/refurbished already-built computer super-cheap? Hell, Walmart and Dell sell brand new computers with way more power then you'll ever need for those purposes at under $400 and sometimes even under $300.

AVOID AVOID AVOID 'netbooks', its just a term for a super-small-form factor wannabe-laptop. My sis got one and its had nothing but issues, same with other friends of mine who got them during the 'netbook craze' last Christmas. AVOID THEM!

I just re-read your original post. In addition to what I stated, that power supply must be replaced: The Dell edition power supply is compatible only with pre-Socket 478 Dell motherboards, and will not work at all with any standard ATX motherboard! Using that PSU with a standard mobo would cause a fire that would completely destroy both the PSU and the mobo, and might cause significant damage to other components. This is because that Silencer 410 DELL appears to use a standard ATX connector, but the wiring and pin assignments are different from the standard ATX arrangement.

Are you serious!? Well thanks for the heads up. I just saw the ATX connector as well as the 4-Pin connector and thought it would work. You've saved me some work!

Thanks, I had no idea. Motherboards and their chipsets always have me confused. The ASRock looks nice.

Can someone recommend me a cheap PSU? Is Fortron still good?
 
 
yeah, I put it up as more of a guide for him since I cant stand the amazon site =\

Also he asked for a sff case but they stink and just don't measure up to a decent antec case and psu combo like that. If I have to choose between form and function I always chose function.

haha.. Agreed on both points.. I normally leave the CA build list's to danny since he seems to not mind amazon so much.
