Sunbeam Rheobus Question

Hey guys... I have a question for my fellow modders... I need a bit of help.
Also, I didn't know if I should post this here or in the Electronics section.

Anyway, I have an old Sunbeam Rheobus that I've modded into a Lian Li drive cover and I wanted to use it again in my case... only not with the default red/blue LEDs. I would like them to be white and maybe another color to indicate a speed change, or maybe just white and they'll get brighter as I increase the voltage. Either way my question is what do I need to do to achieve this? Just buy the appropriate white LEDs and insert them in place of the red/blue ones? Or would this require something else?

If anyone has done this or knows how to work it over I'd greatly appreciate your input... I don't want to screw something up so I figured it best to get some advice on it first.

Have not looked into modding a rheobus, but are the LED's bi-color, or are there two led's? If they are bi-color led's, you would need to look and see what sort of bicolor led's you can get. The idea about having them dim and brighten with speed would be somewhat hard, as you would need to drop the voltage down from the 12V to the 2.2-3V that a standard LED would use.

If the original LEDs are dimmers then the dimming circuitry is already there. However different high power LED have different operating voltage ranges and will need to be accounted for.

They are bicolor LEDs with 3 pins each. You could use 2 LEDs and mount them slightly behind the faceplate and insert a little plexi dot where the old LED was. That way you can get a smoother (flush) front AND keep dual-colored LED lighting. Win-win-situation :)
Cannot tell you from memory if you need resistors, i.e. how much voltage really is applied to the LED. Use caution - and a multimeter-

Alright guys... thanks. I am going to get out my meter and start trying to work at it and see what I can come up with... just figured I'd ask here in case someone has already done this. I like the idea of flush mounting the plexi dots... might have to try that. Anyway, thanks again. Hopefully I can come up with something that looks and works nicely.

I hated how far the LED's stuck out on my Rheobus, so I simply pushed them back into the controller. The light still emits from the holes, but they aren't sticking out in an ungodly manner. Good luck with your Rheobus mod and be sure to post some results!

I successfully completed my goal in replacing the red/blue LEDs with white ones. I did not, however, make them vary in brightness when changing fan voltage. I simply used some white LEDs I had leftover from another project, the typical two leg type. Anyway, it powers on nicely and the white glow that is emitted is not too bright and not too dim... just right :D
Everything worked out quite nicely this way I think, here's why...
When listening to music at night or watching a movie, etc. I turn the fans down to cut down the noise... in this mode the LEDs are off and they don't bother me while relaxing.
When I doing something on the computer or gaming I usually run the fans full speed and this is when the LEDs are powered on.
So let's recap...
LEDs off = dark and peaceful
LEDs on = loud and proud (not really that loud anyway) :)

Here's a quick and dirty shot of the end result... I like this much better than the blue/red.

*Note: this color scheme in my Lian Li goes really well with the new little Logitech K300 keyboard with it's orange and white LEDs.

What are the specs on the LEDs you used? I'd like to replace mine as well.

They are just some 5 mm 12 volt white LEDs with two legs... one anode, one cathode.
I used the same LEDs to run directly from a 12 volt molex plug for interior lighting.

I decided I didn't like the stock colors and brightness either, so here's how I modded some LED's up. Now it's just a single color with variable brightness.
I shot a quick vid of how it came out

maybe this can help some of those who are still trying to mod their rheobus LED's ;)

Too bad I hadn't seen this before. For mine I grabbed some white/blue led's from performance-pcs I believe. Just cut them to the correct length and make the bends and pop them in. Work great.
