I have some questions about a SUN clone that I recently received. The unit is a Tatung COMPstation U10. There is 1GB of ram (4 168pin DIMMS installed.) The unit contains an ATI Rage PRO Turbo graphics card. The processor is marked U10 440R.

My questions (which I may have answered myself).

Processor speed? I think it is 440Mhz.

OS? I think Solaris...not sure which version.

Keyboard type? It is not PS/2 and actually appears to be an Apple ADB connector? I donno. but it has 8 pins. Any help there?

Mouse>? is there one for this unit?
 
As for the mouse and keyboard, it's probably the proprietary (?) Sun standard from before they switched to USB. You've got pretty much 2 options there. You can get a Sun KB and mouse, or you can buy a KVM switch with Sun support. It may also be possible to get an adapter. I know I've seen the switches at cdw.com. They weren't cheap though. I'm thinking $100-150. Your best bet is probably to eBay for a Sun KB & Mouse. If I remember right a Sun "country kit" (kb, mouse, power cord) is about $70 from Sun.

As for the OS, probably Solaris. Linux and some of the BSDs should work as well, but you'll have a much easier time finding software for Sparc Solaris. You've got plenty of ram, so I'd probably start w/ 9 and work your way back. Last I checked you could DL the Sparc versions from Sun's web site. You might need extra drivers for your clone hardware though.

It sounds like the CPU is a 440MHz Ultrasparc IIi. Probably 1-2MB of cache, I forget which. I've actually got a Sun Ultra 10 w/ that CPU at home (a freebie a couple years back), though it's only got 256MB ram & isn't of much use.

the mouse will depend on the keyboard. older sun rigs had the mouse plugging into the keyboard, then the keyboard into server/workstation, ultra 10 days, I think they had switched to fully mechanical mice, even though they were still on the old connectors, instead of usb.

sun is one of the few companies who makes both the hardware and the software, prepare to see some weird shit.
 
Thanks for the info, guys. The company I work for picked up about 10 of these units and I was allowed to take one home.

Don't know if it woill be worth all the trouble to try to get it up and running. But I may as well try. 5 of the units had video cards. None had keyboard or mouse. If I can get them running we might be able to donate them to a local home for boys.
 
Actually, if you've got a null modem cable you can use the serial port as a console. Or at least you can on Sun hardware. Suns will use ttya as the console if no keyboard is connected.
 
For the one second or so that I actually had video out of the machine it did say something like "Keyboard not detected; using ttya".
