Suitable replacement...

Hello all,

I posted on another subforum about a computer I picked up from an estate sale, the specs are below. (As gathered from a program called Speccy.

I've never build a PC before and always wanted to, then this fell into my lap.... I've been using it this past week, and it definitely has problems, despite the CPU which many on this forum seemed excited about. It's very slow, and needs to be shut down at least once a day to avoid a virtually unusable internet speed...

The motherboard consistently runs at least 95 degrees celcius if not hotter...

It looks like the mother board will need to be replaced...

*CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme 990X @ 3.47GHz

*MotherBoard: Intel Corporation DX58SO2 (CPU 1)

*Graphics: F90JS (1280x1024@60Hz)

*Graphics: SDM-X82 (1280x1024@60Hz)

*Graphics: 1023MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti (EVGA)

*Memory: 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 (8-8-8-20)

*Optical: ASUS DRW-24B1ST ATA DVD-RW

*Storage: 1397GB Western Digital WDC WD15EARS-00MVWB0 ATA Device (SATA)

So looking at the above specs, what current mother board can I get today, then can use all the other components without me needing to go get new memory, cpu, etc?

Thank you all in advance!

Did you install a fresh copy of Windows on it along with the drivers? You should be able to find all the drivers for Windows 7 but Windows 10 might be tricky and would probably work if you stayed with the default drivers that Windows 10 installed for you anyways.

I would replace the thermal paste on the motherboard chipsets / CPU. The X58 motherboards are costly and are used anyways, I would just buy a separate NIC card than replace the motherboard since that will be way cheaper. Also, the CPU is worth about $250 on eBay if you were ever to sell it.

You do not mention cooler brand model on CPU. Definitely would repaste. Check cooler fan rpm and case airflow.
I'm a dabbler so this may be silly or nonsense. Check basics and you won't chase your tail over something simple.

Memory health check and HDD check would not hurt.
Check installed programs list for conflicts running in backround.
Any used computer I would check and record BIOS setting, then revert to default to see if this changes temperature.
Changing motherboard you may need new windows key and install.

Might want to add a separate temp monitoring program and compare.

If there is a large (heavy) cooler mounted these do not always travel well, another reason to repaste.
Ignore this if it does not fit

It should still work for moderate tasks...the biggest thing you need is to install an SSD and do a fresh install of windows. SSD's are getting cheaper, you can pickup a 250GB drive for around 50 bucks.

You are at an end road for upgrading anything else (maybe you can upgrade the video card). That CPU is as fast as they get for that socket and 8GB of RAM is plenty for now (with that setup)
