Ordering a new computer for my little brother tonight from newegg and wanted to know if all this would work well together. Want to do a little OC'ing but nothing major.
Planning on getting:
e6600
ASUS P5K-VM
G.Skill 2x2gb pc6400
evga 8800 GTS
NT06 lite
Liberty 620W
SG03 Black
70gig wd raptor
 
everything you have selected passes my sniff test. Maybe the only thing I would consider is going with a bigger HDD.

70Gb is not much these days.
 
I'd probably say a bigger or second hard drive. Also, can he not wait a week for the price cuts?
 
I'd say skip that 74 GB raptor and get a 750 GB Western Digital. A single drive in an SFF is just that much lighter, and with the extreme aureal density of the 750 you gain most if not all the speed back that the 10,000 rpm raptor gives you.
 
Ok, I upped it to the 150gb raptor. He only used about 60 gb on his last hdd so I figure this will be enough. How much money would it save to wait for the price drop?
 
That raptor will save time on bootup and load times in gaming. Wether its worth the cost is a personal choice. A 74Gb Raptor and a cheaper 7200rpm hd for storage might be a better choice than a single 150Gb Raptor. Depends on what your lil brother is needing and wanting.

The E6600 is a good proc but come July 22nd the E6750 is going to be a better deal overall I'd say. Its suppose to drop to around $183. Plus its a more powerful chip.
 
If you're going to get a 6*50, why not get the DS2R? With native FSB1333, you should have access to the 1:1 divider anyways. Throw in the fact that its a better board everywhere else (I think.), and doesn't have puke yellow everywhere, I think its a win. I like mine.

That's if you get a 6*50 anyways.

What about the Silverstone ST60F? Slightly cheaper. Still a good power supply, still modular.
 
Alrighty, guess I'll go with the gigabyte then and try to convince my brother he doesn't need a raptor
 
raptors arent that great... hell for the price of a 70GB one you can get 2 7200RPM 16MB Cache 500GB hard drives... and run them in raid... that would be faster than a lone raptor... by far

would I need a raid controller for that? Also, will that ram be good enough or should I go for some ballistix?
 
The Raptors are nice but not a necessary item. You can get great gaming on a good 7200 hd. If money is a problem go with a Seagate 7200.10 or maybe try that new Samsung T166 model. its suppose to be really nice. WD makes some good 7200 models as well. Whatever you get make sure its 16Mb cache.

The P5K-VM doesnt have RAID so you would need a separate controller for it. The DS2R has RAID on it though. If you want to RAID your drives (not necessary for a gaming rig) you would probably be better off getting the DS2R. Personally I wouldnt RAID. Doesnt really help much for gaming purposes.

Edit: The Ballistix RAM is very good and the only reason why I lean to it with the DS2R and the P5K-VM is because we know it works well with both and it can run fine at the 2.1v that the P5K-VM allows for. Other RAM will work for both mobos. Its just that not a lot of variety of modules has been tested yet by users. If its on the Gigabyte or ASUS CVL list then it should be fine.

Me personally, I tend to try and look at the practicality of things vs. how much they cost. Some of the things in this build are expensive and not necessarily useful, at least in my opinion.

E6600 - wait for the 6X50 series..should be cheaper and better

ASUS P5K-VM - I personally would prefer the Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R, but that's me. The overall differences between the two aren't that much.

G.Skill RAM - does your brother really need 4GB of RAM? What does he use his computer for? 2GB is still plenty for most uses, including gaming. Also I'd look into getting Crucial Ballistix RAM, or some other RAM with Micron D9's in them....

Liberty 620W - You're not near needing a 620W PSU...in fact I can't think of any SFF setup that could accomodate the parts needed to ever use up to 620W.... The Corsair 520HX or any other good 500W PSU will do just fine, and probably cost less. Make sure whatever PSU you get is modular, don't want a bunch of messy, useless cables lying around in your case...

NT06 Lite - do you have a fan you're gonna pair this with? I'd definitely recommend you put a 120mm fan on there is you want real cooling... You should also have a look at the Thermalright XP-120...it has more heatpipes than the NT06 and should perform better

70GB Raptor - personally, I think Raptors are mostly hype and marketing. I don't think having a much faster harddrive would benefit most users in real life situations..for video encoding or other HDD intensive activities, it might be worth it, but this looks like a gaming rig, where a raptor might only affect boot times and load times, which aren't worth the cost of a Raptor. Go get 2 Seagate 500GB HDD's. They'll be fast enough and offer more storage and better value than any Raptor will...not to mention Raptors are noisy....

Yes, having a much faster hard drive will benefit most users in real life situations. That’s exactly what they do! People buy insanely large drives, because they are cheap and they seem to think they will use a petabyte of storage so it’s a better value. Storage is a big portion of your overall computer's performance... there is a reason why we are no longer using 4200RPM drives! A Civic gets better mileage than a BMW, but which one is more fun to drive? :) You will notice the difference in overall snapiness of your system. One recommendation is to get the 150GB, if you plan on using ¾ of the capacity or more. Drives perform significantly worse the more data they have on them.

Technically yes. Higher starting FSB means you will need a higher FSB to overclock it.

You cannot fit a 120mm fan on the NT06 inside a SG03 case, there is simply not enough space, you will likely need to use your power supply to extract the heat by facing it towards your HSF, the clearance is minimal.

The Thermalright XP-120 idea seems good though, IIRC it performs better then the NT06 in reviews and is low enough in height to fit, the Thermalright SI-128 is even better but its a bit too tall.

Good question. Right now only time I would suggest 4Gb RAM is if the OP wanted Vista O/S or possibly XP 64. 4Gb adds to the cost but well worth it from what I have heard about Vista. I dont think the OP mentioned which O/S he was choosing though.
 
ok, going down to 2 gigs of ballistix and a 500W liberty entermax. I've seen a lot of people using the NT06 in the SG03 but if the XP-120 fits then that would be a better option, i just didn't know it fit
 
The NT06 was designed for the Sugo cases specifically to come in under the PSU and use the PSU as the active portion for cooling. A XP120 might be slightly shorter than the NT06, and thus won't be as effective. You could ghetto an 80 or 90 under it, however.

Even still, regardless of what OS you're using, don't bother with 4GB of RAM unless you'll actually be doing stuff that needs 4GB of RAM. I don't think gaming benefits from 4GB over 2GB enough to justify the cost. Only reason I'd go for 4GB is if it was cheap or if I actually needed it...

Vista isn't as RAM hungry as you think, and there's certainly no reason to get 4GB just because you have Vista....

I just don't think that the difference in speed between 7200RPM drives and Raptors are worth the price difference. 7200RPM is fast enough IMO, unless you actually feel your HDD's slowing your system drastically..for gaming, a raptor is probably just going to decrease load times, which IMO are not worth the sacrifices of a Raptor.

Wrong. The ingame load times is where the Raptors do out perform other 7200 drives. Thats one of the main reasons people get them. The other main reason is that O/S boot up and shutdown are faster than other 7200 drives. These are the two areas Raptors have yet to be beat by 7200 drives. It has to do with the Raptor's 10,000rpm spin.


Now wether thats worth the extra cost? Thats up to the individual to decide. You could argue that point either way depending on your feelings.
