I currently have the following system and am looking to upgrade:

System Specs:
Intel E6600
EVGA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard (122-CK-NF68-AR)
2 x 1024 Mb Patriot DDR-2 800 @ 4-4-4-12 (my Corsair C8500 C5 fried at QuakeCon last year)
EVGA 8800 GTS 640 Mb
WD Raptor 10 150 Gb hard drive (application drive)
2x Seagate 400 GB hard drives
2x Seagate 750 Gb hard drives
Lite-on 16x Double Layer DVD+-R/RW Drive
Mitsumi 3.5 1.44 Floppy Drive
SoundBlaster Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Pro Series Sound Card
Thermaktake Armor Jr. Aluminum Case
Thermaltake Toughpower 850 watt PSU
Logitech G-15 keyboard
Logitech G-5 Mouse
Samsung SyncMaster 204B 1600x1200 LCD monitor

The current video card is an EVGA 640-P2-N821-FX 8800GTS 940 with 96 Stream processors. The original plan was to get another EVGA 8800GTS to extend the legs of the system along with a processor update. I am now planning to flash to the P32 Bios and upgrade to an E8400 Wolfsdale processor and am wondering should I just pass this 8800 GTS 640 card down to my son's rig (he has a 7600GT) and install newer cards in SLI or not? I thought about a 9800GX2 but I can't connect the 6 and 8 pin power cables with the Raptor 10 mounted in the veritical drive bay so I was thinking about a pair of 9800 GT's (if/when the come out) or a pair of 8800 GT 512's since trying to find a match the old 8800 GTS 640 new is pretty slim. Suggestions?

TIA

well, buying a new GTS 512mb i dont think would be a great move. Have you considered adding another 8800GTS 640 for SLI?

200 after rebate? Its easy to find it, not very slim. Even if the new 640 gts has 112shaders, it will still be compatible with the old 96 shader 640mb. Heck, another option is just to stick it out till junish and get a 9900gtx...?

I personally dont think you should spend the money on 2 new cards, when the card you have is pretty capable in SLI

I didn't think you could SLI the 112 stream processor cards with the 96 stream processor cards. That was the original plan to SLI two of the 640 cards together. I need to do more research. Thx

Ditto. You're not going to get $200+ worth of performance if you upgrade to a new GTS/GT. I'd try to SLi if you want to or OC it. I'm waiting for the 9900GTX, assuming it delivers as a true child of the 8800GTX. I'd save my money. Save $200+ and put it towards a $500-600 card, that's what I'm doing.

The 9800GTX is pretty much a glorified GTS (G92), I wouldn't waste the $. The next cards are heavily rumored to come out this summer/fall, take your pick :).

With its unique configuration of stream processors, we asked NVIDIA what would happen if you combined EVGA’s e-GeForce 8800 GTS SSC with a conventional GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB card with 96 stream processors. According to NVIDIA “In the case of using 1 96 SP board with 1 112 SP board in SLI configuration, the 112 SP board will still run with 112 SPs enabled, but given most apps use an AFR mode for SLI scaling, the real world SLI performance you will see in most cases will be similar to the performance of 2 96 SP boards.”
