wassup, i just got a thermaltake V1 for my quad and some arctic silver 5. I wanted to know if a thin line over the 2 cores would be a good application. A while ago i seen people post up pics of their application but i cant seem to find them Anyone have pics of their work? let me know.

Dot and drag if you want to get a nice thin line.

theres a prime example of what happens when you dont dot and drag. Splurging it on there will get you high temps. You need to follow the law of less is more. AS5 does not conduct heat as well as metal which is why a thick layer will get you higher temps. You just need a tiny bit to fill in the places to get rid of all the manufacturing imperfections since you can surface grind anything 100% free of scratches.

Theres a perfect example even tho is the wrong way for a core2duo. Even a bit less then that I would recommend. Carefully apply as the tip of the AS5 is wide and you wont get a line that thin, which is why next time I apply I am going to dot and drag.

I've seen this discussed multiple times over the years and I would highly recommend AGAINST the way the manufacturer's website says to apply it.

Use a credit card or any other flat edged surface to make an even layer as thin as you can possible get it, but covering the entire surface.

I've done extensive testing on my pc's, and this always yields the lowest temps and is the easiest way for you to NOT mess it up. I don't care what anyone else says, this is just IME. (in my experience)

with my c2d I tired every recommended manufacturers way until I just said screw it, covered the whole surface with a thin layer using a flat edge and temps dropped finally.

Do i need to remove the chip? Spreading it out with a credit card would require me to remove it. Also, when you say little do you mean ball-point pen little across the cores? And if i do it this way, would i need to remove it? Sorry for the questions its just i have seen this discussed so many times that im a little apprehensive. Any other suggestions?

put your finger in a ziplock bag and apply a small line of paste like the pictures. That is the amount you need. Now spread it out using your finger and flatten the compound by scraping the edge of a card on it. This smooths out the compound and you can get the layer very thin and even this way. Similiar to flattening cake frosting on a cake to make it smooth.

I did remove my chip. I kept the plastic tab on that protects the underside of the chip while doing it so I would not get any crap on it.

see thats the problem, i do not have the cap. So removing the chip and applying will be very hard.....so im thinking of applying no bigger than a "BB" size drop and spreading out in a line. Taking a zip lock bag around my figure or card and smoothing out as best i can while its still in. None on the heatsink. This good enough?

spreading a thin coat over the chip was kinda back with XPs P4s to 939s maybe AM2s as well. But Core2duos have a shell overtop of the chip to begin with. There a thread around somewhere with a guy cutting around the sides taking it off then directly applying paste to a e4300 I believe. Might be on xtremesystems now that I think of it. I'd just do the normal line way with C2ds

Here we go, IHS comes off, then do the spread/ credit card method otherwise I Say just do the line:

Sometimes I will spread a very very thin layer on the heatsink too. Or in the very least I will test fit the heatsink after I spread the AS5 around just to make sure the heatsink is making good contact with the CPU and it will also help spread the AS5 a little bit.

thanks guys, ill be putting in the HSF later on today so ill post back. thanks.

FYI: A very thin, even layer won't help if the IHS is concave/convex.

thanks again guys. I just finish installing my thernaltake v1. It runs great its on med-low and im idling at
34c
32c
32c
33c
On Everest's load i hit between 48-49c. At one point it was at 50c but dropped right back down to 48c. So im pretty happy.

with the stock HSF i was idling at 36c-38c but would hit 62c on load within 1 min of everests tests.

Thanks.
