Im new to laptop an netbooks. My question is i want a small laptop or netbook would be even better that i could use for browsing the web, youtube etc. playing music. durability. and also not a must but would be nice could play older games like diablo an some side scrolling games. what would you reccomend me? I really like the idea of a netbook for its size an battery life but i have no idea what they can do performance wise. Thanks for all the input! Brian

A lot of netbooks can play some of the older games.

Here is a list of what the Dell mini 9 and 10v can play, I have the mini 9 and it runs starcraft with no problems. Youtube runs great as well but it does struggle on the NBC watch full episodes section and on Hulu (although some people have got hulu to work alright)

I am sure there are some more powerful ones out there as well. I was reading engadget today and this one looks real nice.

I own a Dell mini 10v, and dig it so far. I Hackintoshed it (super simple - everything works, with minor tweaks), an dual-boot Win7. Both run reasonably well. I never thought of tossing Diablo2 or something on there for killing time, but I just might now! Maybe Carmageddon2!

I suggest checking a CULV notebooks, like the Acer Timeline 13" instead. Pricier, but more usable and has an awesome battery life compared to netbooks.

So are these netbooks capable of playing winamp and browsing the web an the same time or will there be lag? Does anyone else have anymore reccomedations? I have no clue about these an would like to get a decent one from the start.

i would get the gateway lt3103
or the acer 1810

both are 11.6 in screens (still very small)
they have more memory than most netbooks (2 gigs)
and better graphics
ati or 4500 intel

Dude - my mini 10v has 25x the power that my 486DX-66MHz has. That could run Office apps, IE+Flash, and WinAmp, with no hiccups.

Ppl are still overestimating the actual "needs" of today....

Op might want to check out the new HP Mini 311 (11.6" screen). Atom N270 (or N280 for $25 more) + Nvidia 9400m graphics = ION

Adobe is releasing Flash 10.1 in the near future which can leverage the nVidia graphics for better flash performance (youtube, Hulu, etc.). At $399 starting price its the same price as other models (regular not-on-sale price) so a no-brainer for me for much better graphics. Some people have tested WoW and LOTRO and it runs ok on this. Thinking about getting one myself. Two more ION netbooks coming out soon to look into is the Lenovo S12 (12" screen so a bit bigger) and Samsung N510 (11.6" screen). With these 3 new models I don't see a reason to buy one of the older ones with Intel GMA950 graphics unless you want to save $$ and get one of those older ones for like $250-$300 on sale.

If you can afford to wait just a bit do so. The Acer1410TZ will offer the SU7300 and GMA4500MHD. While the ION sounds great you must remember it is an ION LE and Atom CPU. Down the line the CPU horsepower will get you.

I have a U81a with the GMA4500 and on the 10 day trial of WoW I saw nothing less than 30 FPS running around on all low settings at native 1366x768 . Usually with low characters there I saw 50+ FPS. I would imagine an SU7300 and 4 gigs of dual channel would have similar results as WoW is not all that CPU intensive..
