I am upgrading from my 64mb Geforce 420 MX . . . Finally :). Now my systems specs are 1800+ Athlon running @ 1.54 ghz and 512 DDR ram. My limit is $350. I have been looking at a ATI Radeon 9800 XT. I definately want to be able to dual screen, but from what I know all new cards are supporting this. Any suggestion on a card I should get within my price range and does the maker of the card matter (Powercolor, PYN, Gainward, Saphire, ext.)

It would be rather cpu bound tho, you could go for a 6800nu for $50-$60 less. Pocket the diff for your next upgrade.


edit. That is the 128 mb version of the gt, $380 will get you the 256mb version. sorry bout that. :D Either way you will be cpu bottlnecked on your current system. Maybe flash it to an xt. Save money for faster cpu or another 512 meg of good ram
 
even get a cheap 9800 for 160 or 170 and buy and amd 64 2800 and mobo
 
You really should go for the 6800 ..... I know it is a bit more expensive but if you go for the light version its only 50$ more. And you have a chance to open up the extra pipelines and bring it damn near 6800 GT settings. If not then wait for the 6600 ... if it isn't actually vapour ware ... like the 6200
 
A higher speed cpu and an additional 512 megabytes of ram will come later.. :) Right now I need to get a new video card and I realise it will be capped because of my outdated processor. My question is why do you suggest the 6800?

Here are my two cents:
I would not waste my money on either the 6800 (GT or regular) or the 6600. I would just wait and save up my money. Then I would build a new computer with a stronger processor/mobo and RAM. Possibly salvage parts such as the sound card and hard drive (s) from you old PC to save money. THEN and ONLY THEN get a strong video card such as a 6800 GT.

Getting a strong card now is throwing money down the toilete basically. The card will be severly CPU limited.

However, If you do not want to wait and save up your money then you get either an ATI 9600 XT, the 9800 Pro and possibly flash it to a 9800 XT. Also, ( I think) the ATI ALL-in-Wonder cards are nice. Possibly you can get a 9600 ALL-IN WONDER or a 9600XT ALL In Wonder.
 
Let me explain better.. I realise that my CPU will limit the power of the graphics card, but right now what I need is a video card that will last me for a while. Right now I don't need to upgrade my CPU and ram to do what I want to do, while I do need a new video card. What I want is a video card that will last me for a while and when I do decide to upgrade my CPU/ram I will be able to take advantage of it.
 
Absolute best agp card you can get for a maximum of $350 is either a X800 Pro or one of those 128MB ddr 6800GTs.
 
GORANKAR, the Asus card you listed does say 6800GT, but that's truthfully a 6800, witht the processor overclocked to GT speeds, but the memory is still a sulky 700MHz. The GT's memory clocks to 1000MHz (1 ghz).

In reguards to the poster, I agree with most everyone else the 6800GT would be your best bet, if not that then check out the 6600GT in AGP when it comes out later this year, or the base 6800. Either should do really well :)
