I'm pretty well set on an E6400 and Gigabyte 965P-DS3 as it seems to be the cheapest among the good-overclocking boards, however I'm open to suggestions on motherboards. As fas as memory goes, I notice looking at the OC database that Corsair and GSkill are the two most common brands, but they each have about 5-6 different versions of PC6400. Which brand/model tends to be most compatible/overclock the best?

LIke everyone else & their grandma, get the
6400, DS3 + ANY decent brand DDR2 800.

You should hit a nice 3.2Ghz fairly easily, unless you just happen to get a dud chip! :(

I don't understand why people are skimping $40 to get the 6300 then they have to spend an extra $200 on SUPER duper DDR2 900++ ram to reach high clocks. It makes more sense to get the 6400 & shoot for around 3.2Ghz with DDR2 800 at spec... or slightly over if you can get more than 3.2Ghz.

Do the timings on the C2D's matter enough to justify the $45 difference between the Cas4 and Cas5 Corsair?

You may notice some differences in synthetic benchmarks. At least that's what I noticed.

Well this may be a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway... :p

Why aren't people buying PC2 8500 ram along with the DS3 and the C2D? Th mobo supports it (or so I've read). Wouldn't the 8500 (1066) be more future proof than the 6400 (800)? or is the performance diff so small it's not worth the extra $60-$100?

When I built my machine last weekend, I put in some nasty-slow ddr2 I already had to get by with for a few weeks until I buy some fast memory. I was going to go with some PC 8500, but everybody on here is buying the slower stuff, so now I'm kinda confused.

For one, the difference is pretty much under 4% and will not be noticable so the price is not justified. Also, if you really want ur ram runnign at ddr1000+, there are sticks of ddr800 that are pretty much guarenteed to hit those speeds overclocked (Gskills 2GBHZ) and they cost less then stocks of ddr1000. And btw, ddr1000 does not overclock well from what I have seen because the sticks are already pretty much maxed so you cant overclock ur ddr1000 to ddr1200 (im sure some VERY expensive sticks can though).
