hey guys. i am heading off to college, and i am still debating as to whether to leave my desktop home and just take my laptop, or take both. i figure if i do some upgrades to my lappy, i will basically match my desktop so i wont need to bring it.

one thing that i need more of for my lappy is storage. i figured the easiest and least expensive thing would be to get an external drive. what are your guys' experiences with these and do you have any reccomendations for specific models. also, which is better for this application firewire of usb2?

Theoretically, the USB 2.0 drive will be faster, but only slightly.

I can't recommend any specific drives. The only thing I can do is to recommend that you research the enclosure properly if you are just going to get an enclosure to install a drive in. I bought a 3.5" encloser a month ago, and it will not work with NTFS partitions on any drive I put in it. Only FAT32 is supported. Weird.

The other thing is to make sure that you hook it up to a USB Hi-Speed (2.0) port, otherwise you will get slow ass performance.. :)

I've used Kingwin and Vantec 2.5" drive enclosures with success, if it helps you. Very fast on USB 2.0. I would go for a 2.5" enclosure + a HD if you need portability. If not, Maxtor makes good 3.5" external drives with the one touch backup system. They have a cooling fan in them, but they're heavy as a brick. Good luck shopping!
 
i dont really care about portability, and it would be cheapest to take a hard drive out of my desktop and put it in an elclosure. i have tried san disk(think thats it) and it was crappy. it always had read and write errors and got hot. i just need a fast and reliable enclosure
 
Build your own. I would get one with USB2.0 and Firewire...that way, no matter where you go, you've got high speed and compatibility.

that was the direction that i was heading, but then i saw e-sata which is really fast. i have been tring to find reviews of pcmcia sata adapters, but havent found anytihng yet. i dont know how good these would be. better than usb or firewire? anyone have any experience with pcmcia sata?
