Suggestions for a new rig

Hey all. I'm trying to put together a decent rig for a buddy of mine. $$$ is the biggest factor. It doesn't have to be like "Big Blue" or anything, just a modest rig will do. He's got an old x86(not sure if it's a 386 or 486) so ANYTHING is definitely a step up! I'd like some input on what I should use for him. I would prefer to stay w/ AMD and was looking at the XP Mobile or Sempron but haven't made up my mind.
So here is what I need for the rig: CPU, mobo, HD(40-60Gig should suffice), CD R/RW, DVD R/RW, memory(512Mb preferably) and possibly a case(thinking about using his old one). Now as for the 2 burners, he wants to be able to burn 2 cd's at a time so I convinced him if he was gonna get two, he might as well shell out the extra few $$ for a DVD burner.
Anyone have suggestions? And remember $$ is a big issue so I'm really looking for value- would LOVE to try to stay under $300.

I agree with going on ebay. I buy alot of my PC parts off ebay including video card, CPU and a few other things and I have never had a problem.

BTW, he doesn't do anything much to where he needs a video card so onboard video is just fine. If he wants to upgrade later, at least he has that option.
 
I would avoid a Gigabyte board in general. Especially a refurbished one. That's a recepie for disaster.

I work as a service tech and I see alot of dead Gigabyte boards. With totally different chipsets I saw two of them burn up their southbridge chips. WTF? The southbridges both cooked and the outer casing of the chipset cracked.

One board was a NForce 2 and the other was an Intel i865PE.

Unless it's used, you're not going to put something like that together for that sort of price even if you want to use, say, a $30 case/powersupply [I wouldn't recommend it]

NEwegg has one that's $35 shipped (powmax atx case, + 400W psu)
Foxconn i845 motherboard : $40 shipped (it has sound, network, and video onboard)
40 gig hdd $50
$65 DVD-rw

$70 cpu
$70 ram
and you are already well above the $300 mark.
No operating system in there, no keyboard, mouse, monitor or speakers.. using onboard video, onboard sound, onboard lan..

I know for $300 not to expect much. Like I said, he's got an old X86 so pretty much any upgrade and he'll be amazed! I was just trying to see what were some good low-priced chips and mobos. I think he'd be pretty satisfied with around a 1-1.5 GHz system.

Why not help him out with some upgrades for yourself.. I see you've got a 40 gig hdd in your rig, let him have yours for a bargain, and get yourself another 120... etc..

and instead of running 512mb kingston pc3200 (200/400 Mhz) @ 220/440.. get yourself some PC4000+ and be off and running!

Another good idea! And I like that one even better :D ! I had been thinking about getting a SATA HD ;) .
