Hey guys I am looking for a new home theatre receiver for under $500 which will give me excellent sound quality for everything I do including gaming, movies, and music. I currently have a Sony STR-DE598 which has done well for the past few years but needs an upgrade seeing as I just upgraded my speakers. I have Cerwin Vega VE-12s for my front and left channels, and am looking to get VE-5s for my rears, my center is a Polk Audio CS10. My Sub is a Yamaha SW-5 (150 Watt). The interesting thing about the sub is that it doesn't appear to exist ANYWHERE on the internet. Its like its not a real item, theres no record of it. I got it as a gift a few years back and it was bought at Best Buy but i cant find a thing on it anywhere.

Anyways I am looking for a nice receiver which can really bang at loud volumes without distortion, at least 100 watts per channel and preferably supports 7.1 surround.

Thanks in advanced for all your help

From what I have seen Best Buy sometimes has the manufacture relable the item part number to something specific for them. That way they can be annoying about price matches as the Model numbers dont match any other location that is using the manufacture model number.

In regards to recievers I would go with a Onkyo. Yamaha's recently have downgraded the power in their reciever line and it sounds not as full as a result.

6ave.com is having (might still be on, link still works) a name your price deal right now (I think it ends today). Some deals are very good, some are close to listed. I snagged a Pioneer elite SC-05 the alst time they ran this for $700 shipped.

Marantz SR5003 can be had for $480, though it is a little under your 100 watts/channel it will probably be a bit closer to its rating than a new model yamaha.

Take a look at HK and Onkyo receivers too.

I run a 7.1 Canton setup with a HK AVR 254 and highly recommend it. The bang for buck is amazing. I love the video processing that it does and the sound is incredibly clear. Power rating is VERY conservative. Canton speakers are very demanding.

The only thing I caution you on regarding Marantz receivers is that they do not implement the Audyssey EQ settings to any of the lossless formats. Most agree that currently this EQ is the best on the market as it calculates dips and peaks and adjusts the speakers to that as well as the crossover frequencies of each set of speakers. If your room setup is not acoustically optimum (like mine) that can be a HUGE deal (it was a deal breaker for me). And its like that by design so it will not be changed with any firmware updates in the future.

Onkyo, Denon and I think Harmon Kardon will implement that EQ over lossless formats (with a few exceptions).

..just a thought..

Don't know what else you have hooked into your receiver, but you can always go the route of tossing it all together (maybe even selling it) and getting a kicka$$ amp. That's what I did. Found an Emotiva LPA-1, used, for a great deal and you wouldn't believe the difference.

Forgive me, but I'm not sure I undertsand your rationale for upgrading. What are the features you desire in your new receiver?
