• Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.

Suggestion: Can not start a thread without 50 posts.

I've been a longtime member of the forums and been here at [H] pretty much since it started. I do not have a huge post count but I have always read the forums. Lately I have noticied something.

Since [H] and the [H] Forums have became a little more "mainstream" in the computing world we are attracting more noobs by the minute. I mean the term "noobs" in the nicest possbile way. With the recent spam of Doom 3 threads and other generally dumb threads, I suggest the following:

A new registrant is not able to actually start a new thread without first achieving 50 posts. This will encourage searching and posting in existing threads.

Also it will deter spamming because no true spammer is going to take the time to make 50 posts just so he can start a new thread. If he did, a mod would certainly catch him by the time he hits 50 and he would be banned.

Just an idea, I am sure you will not implement it, but I just want to make the community better and I fear the quality of these forums is going down day by day. :(

Or, we can give people thread privledges from the beginning, and the mods can lock the spam and deal with the spammers. Maybe we should remove the thread privledges of people who spam, or just hand out three day bans for Doom3 spam.

Remember, that many people register here and join the community because they have a problem/question. If those people were denied their thread privledges because of their postcount alone, then they may not join, or will spam their way to 50 just to ask their question. I can also forsee threadjacks happening, because people cannot start new threads. I believe that the mods here can deal with the spam, and thus I see no reason to deny people help over it.

Yeah good points. Like I said just an idea. :) Thanks for listening.

Also, the "deteriorating forum maturity" sort of phrase has historically come up every 2-3 months. It's really pretty well self-regulating, though, particularly with GM being a paid-access area. There are very few complaints when a mod has to lock something down (save the guy who couldn't figure out that when the rules say "no talking about piracy" they mean "no talking about piracy") in a technical forum, and spammers don't have the inclination to pay $5/ban for off-topic privileges. The D3 crap will pass on, and many new users will never post again, and we'll be fine until HL2 releases at the same time as Duke Nukem Forever (ba-dum!)

We've got some classic-style GM going in there ATM, too.

Maturity always drops during the summer when school is off and the kiddies come out and play. Give it a few weeks, they'll be back in jr. high, and Doom 3 will no longer be a craze. Notice how immaturity is self-breeding. People start joking/clowning, and other immature members seize upon it. Their feeble minds overcome, they will continue to one-up the previous fad/catchphrase/cliche/pic/whatever until a mod steps in. Both of these are phenomena are part of every decent-sized public forum on the internet. All that mods can do is lock and ban until order is restored. [H] is not unique in this problem.

that would be good i know im new here but i plan on sticking around

i think alot of forums need to start doing this myself but the only problem with this is that what if one of those "n00bs" joined on the sole purpose of getting help on soemthing that he has no idea how to fix on his pc, i know i wouldnt want to post 50 times before i could finally post my urget question

OK :)

But seriosuly, what *IS* the best DESK for Doom 3???!!!??!!11 lol

Your desk means nothing if your power cord sucks.

You're not kidding! Next up I need to think about what Cold Cathode is best for my Case Window for Doom 3.

making a limitation based on postcount implies that postcount matters. it should be clear by now that postcount doesn't matter too much. some members have few posts but most of them are rich in content. others may have a huge number of posts but mostly pointless spam. you will notice that the new forums no longer show the user's postcount below their nick in threads. this further points out postcounts pointlessness.

i agree with other points made, people's first posts are often asking for help, it would be a travesty to deny them to post when they registered to make a help post in the first place.

i understand where you're coming from, however the good that may come from it is not outweighed by the inconveinance it brings.

^qft.

Like most of the members here, my first post was requesting help for a computer issue. I needed to make a thread about it, unless you wanted me threadjacking your thread.

Be nice to n00bies, guys. You were one at some point, too. :)

I whole-heartedly support these 3-day bans for spamming. It's much easier to justify than a permaban.

most misguided members can be reformed through a temp ban. those that can't, or spam porn, just remove them, they're not worth the time to babysit.

lorcani seems to be thinking what i was thinking when i read this thread. Many people join for help and once they get it they go away or become members of the community. I hope that we can get more peopel involved in the community and i think we are since the community is ever expanding. I also support some sort of temporary ban system for spamming but i think their should at least be a warning before a ban even if it is temporary.

Yep.

IMHO, if you decide that everyone has to see your wonderful pornography collection, you may be better off posting somewhere else. ;)

There's a thin line between spamming and just a short post. Some questions can be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." Even a 3 letter word like that in the right situation is more informative than a 25 word post about helping someone pick "the best power cord for Doom 3." A warning is un-necessary for that. IMHO, the moderators are very nice here, and you will know in the back of your mind that you really deserved the ban... if you ever get one, of course. :)

To tell you the truth i am more afraid of a title then a ban. :p

Not to mention that spam is not a single post but a way of life. No one will likely be banned for a spammy post. But when you pull a qlat over a period of months, you get singled out as a chronic spammer. Those people will get a very long time to think about their posting style. Or look at the people who started useless Doom3 threads or derailed other ones with asanine replies, they deserved what they got. Now I'm not advocating bans for a single empty post, but those who make it a habit, or give into the mob mentality/spinoffs, are the problem ones.

Nah, don't be. Titles require effort and/or arrogance, as a general rule.

Both titles and bans are easy to avoid. Common sense and common courtesy are the only requirements.

Listening also helps avoid titles:p

Hmm...Should i take advice on how not to get a title from the 2 people who most recently acquired titles?
Anyway in the spirit of not getting of topic (anymore than we have) I do think that the point M11 is good but may be flawed. Though most people who would receive bans would be longtime spammers. Some n00bies out there dont really know they are spaming. I know it doesnt quite make sense but im sure their are people who just make short comments because they may not know anything on the topic but dont want to be left out. Which is why i think that a warning may be appropriate.

this may come as a surprise, but what does qft mean? all i can think of is quite fucking true (sorry to be OT ;))

Thats why I identified chronic spam, intentional thread derailment, and spinoffs as being the problem. All three things cannot be done out of naivity.

P.S. I have a bit of experience in dealing with this stuff:p

In your opinion, xphantg0d, what should give a warning for (vs. immediate banning)? Everything?

Hmmmm. Although the points are good and it prevents spamming, and forum mishcef...what about the good people that sign up for this forum just to ask a question because they are having a problem? They have to make 50 posts just to ask it? I don't think this would be a good idea.

Yep. You can tell within the first 10 posts if someone is going to be an issue. I say we take out the troulbemakers, and never hear from them again. ;)

This has been presented many times before, about each year the forum has been around and the same answer still applies. Everyone is welcome here until you prove yourself to be otherwise. When anyone really screws up, we generally kill them and eat their bones without prejudice to their registration date or amount of posts ;) :p

Well, something like this may stop or slow down the sick bastards in the gaming forum. I was just totally grossed out. Same idiot from yesterday or the day before posting those sick pictures, I guess.

Yeah, that's one of the sick sob's. Mahatmaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. You are one disgusting person. I can't read what you said, or look at your pictures. Ever heard of an ignore list, punk?

[campaign mode] My fellow citizens, if my plan had been implemented, then this shamful act would never have occured. These spammers need to be brought to justice![/campaign mode]

:D

How did Mahatmaaaaaaaaaaaaaa taste?

I think there should be a DOOM3 dedicated forum. This crazy could last longer than you think
