All I'm doing is running Squid, maybe Clam AV, Dansguardian. I need something lightweight, fast, and a bit newbie friendly as far as drivers go.

On second thought, all I'll be running is SquidGuard .

Three words for you. Damn Small Linux. "50mb's of penguin power" as the slogan goes. Based on KNoppix and finds almost everything just like its big brother. Fluxbox, and some other minor apps combine for one quick distro. Comes as a live CD, But has several type of installs available. I'd look at some type of thin client with a USB pen or CF as my only drive. I have run it once or twice and was very impressed. Not something I would run as is for a main desktop..but it would do the job. You can boot it into RAM in a machine with as little as 256mb. Will run on damn near anything form a 486 with 16mb of RAM on up. Has a decent apt-get like package handler too. I found it better at hardware detection than Puppy linux...which to me is basically the same deal just not as mature. Fetaher is available too...but I think they could all learn a little form DSL.

Just my two coppers though..YMMV.

I'm posting from this DSL... sweet, I had no idea such a thing existed.

What are the chances of a Pentium 2 booting from a USB drive?

To be honest all that matters is the Bios. A USB boot wouldnt care what CPU you are running. Simply a matter of the mobo BIOS supporting it. My guess would be no...but without knowing the chipset...I definetly have no clue. Chances arent to good though. That said a Frugal type HD install would be the nuts for you also. If you check out their website they have pretty decent directions to do it. Its not the end of the world though if you cant boot form a USB drive. The frugal install is pretty quick also..remember you can boot the whole OS inside of 256mb of ram..any HD will seem snappy finding that small amount of data.

One thing to add also. At boot type dls toram. Loads the whole kit and kaboodle inside of ram if you have at least 256mb. Makes ANY box feel fast.

Try it out. It seems to me like it's exactly what fits the bill for your needs.

Just glad I could help someone on here instead of the other way around for once.

Don't count on it, I'm pretty sure the 440BX/LX didn't support booting from USB.
