Hi this is not meant to start a war. Between ati and NVIDIA
I need a card 8x agp with duel digital hook ups
I play doom 3 and use 3d studio max.
My price range is about $300. us

I am leaning toward NVIDIA. What’s the best buy?
And are there any hidden mods to get more for my money.
Any help is appreciated thanks for your time.

My monitors are a Samsung 213t and the dell 2405FPW

I don't have a specific board to suggest but given the super hi-res monitors which you're running, you probably should read this DVI article before making a decision. Running DVI at 1600X1200 (or above) can be a bit difficult sometimes because lots of shipping video boards don't really meet the TMDS specs when running at 1600X1200 and 60Hz. The bottom line from that DVI article is that ATI brand boards tend to have excellent DVI implementations whereas NVIDIAs can have problems sometimes.

3DS Max runs with both Direct3D and OpenGL. But non-gaming 3D work is often OpenGL rather than DirectX. NVIDIA's OpenGL has a better reputation in non-gaming programs than ATI's OpenGL. And NVIDIA's current shader implemenations are version 3.0 rather than ATI's which are version 2.0. That basically means that NVIDIAs shaders can have branches and calls and be much longer than ATIs shaders. In the long run, that's probably a good thing for professional programs like 3DS Max.

So basically, I guess if I were you, I would want to buy an NVIDIA GPU but with ATIs DVI implementation. Crap!

Thank you for your suggestions.
UncleMacro --- thanks for the link. Also.

I3roknI3ottle ----what is the nu?
Is it better than the gt?
What about a 6800 non ultra?

Thanks guys.

I thought that nu stood for Non Ultra. I might be wrong though.

I knew I was. I was just pointing out that he had answered his own question. They are actually pretty affordable cards. I kinda wish that I got one of them instead of my 6600 GT that I just got. Oh well, I'll just wait until I get a PCI-E mobo.

IF Ure Going Agp And Play Doom3 But Only Have A 300 Dollar Budget, A 6800 Regular Is The Only Way To Go. However If U Can Save More Money Then Do So Because The Ddr1 Is Really Gonna Slow U Down, Not To Mention The High Texture Compression Cause Its Only 128mb

Jesus christ, how do you type like that?

Your should Probably get the 6600GT or the 6600GT turbo edition from giga-byte, these two card run doom3 like no tomorrow. Or maybe even the X700Pro 256mb.

I'm a max developer and non of todays gaming cards are really good for it (they work but not great), If you want a really good card just for max alone I prefer any card by 3DLabs including the old Oxygen's.

You should get an upper-tier gaming card because any workstation product you can get for around 300 dollars will perhaps be a little better in MAX, but the difference between it playing games and running 3dsmax compared to the difference between a 300 dollar gaming card playing games and running max is not worth it at all.

Basically any 300 dollar workstation card you would get would have super shitty graphics in games. Definately get a card with 256mb of ram though.

Thanks again due to a recent success of my eBay action my funds are now $500.-600,

Any better suggestions?
Max and lightwave are more important to me than doom 3.
But I do love doom.

Thanks so much.
