I was running pretty good on my main rig with a VM and 3 GPU clients for a couple months. Now it shuts down every time I leave the house. I tried dialing back the CPU OC from 3.45 to 3.0, that let it run for a few hours instead of 30 minutes. Windows Vista Business is fully updated. I downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers from AMDs website. It even shuts down when I don't have any clients running. I removed the VMWare player so I could try to get all 3 cores working with the new beta VMplayer. I have not completed the setup on that because I haven't fixed the stability yet. Any ideas?
 
Edit: missed that part.

That or a northbridge going bad.

Time to try a New PSU, see if that works.

shuts down with no clients? Kinda sounds like a PSU issue
 
Yeah. I am leaning towards the PSU as well.
 
The only other PSU I have is about 8 year-old Enermax 430W with 20-pin connector. I'll have to pull 2 vid cards to test it because it has no PCIe connectors. I'll give it a try.

My work computer kept on crashing. Checked out the northbridge (PVG51C) temps, and it was way over the limit. Turns out, the cheap OEM TIM on an equally cheap heatsink was a solid, 1mm thick rock. Replaced that with some Arctic Silver 5 (it's not really overrated, just people expect magic from it...), and it ran fine ever since.

Check your temps, with:
Real Temp
Smart Fan
GPU-z

and see if any are too high (90C = too high for sustained use).
 
I pulled the 2 4890s out of it and left it running last night. It crashed again with just the 4850 and no clients, but it ran long enough to watch a couple movies last night. BBC's Planet Earth on Blu-Ray btw is so incredibly worth it. I'll see if I can't find a high temp somewhere. I have ASUS' temp/voltage probe program installed. Any reason that would be less accurate than the other programs suggested?
 
Touch the northbridge heatsink? If it's unbearbly hot, then it's fine, if it leaves a small burn, then it's too hot.

Most likely causes for this are:
Bad / overheating CPU
PSU dying / beaing loaded over the top
GPU drawing too much power
Northbridge taking it
Memory error (use memtest for this)
I/O error (it will bluescreen, however...)

No, they all use the same sensors. The only thing that it doesn't read properly is the CPU temperature which you need to use something like Real Temp or Core Temp to read.
 
Temps look good. CPU is at 30C idle and MB is at 25-30C. NB and SB heat sinks are both cool and are connected via heat pipe. I checked that older PSU and it doesn't have what I need to connect up. My Mobo has the 8-pin CPU 12V connector and the old PSU has a 4-pin P4 connector. It's also old enough it has 20 pin, no SATA and no PCIe connectors. I just ordered parts for a new machine for my dad. Included is a Corsair CX400 so i'll use that to test it in a couple days. I'll also try one of the 4890s and take out the 4850, but I doubt that will help.
 
just out of curiosity with your current overclock do you have cool 'n quiet running?
 
No, I disabled Cool n Quiet and right now nothing is overclocked. It still shuts off. I thought about going back to all default settings but I am pretty sure I'll get the same result. I am buying a house in 10 days and my time is a little scarce at the moment. I also have a UPS hooked up in line. I hadn't thought about that. I might try bypassing that and see if I gain anything back on it. Or at least test the output voltages with a multimeter.
