Suddenly Loud PS

Recently(read last 1mo or so) pickedup a Fortran 530W PS for the first month or so, it was VERY quiet, recently(last 3ish days) it seems to be making quite a bit more noise. Some of the reviews I had read mentioned that it could get kinda loud, but until just now it had been very quiet.

Two questions.

1) Any idea why it suddenly started getting louder? it "could" be that the house air is warming up, but "she who must be obey'd" keeps the house at a uniform 65F year round, be it heat or Air, something's always on ;)

2) Is there a way to swap out fans, I've not opened it up yet to look so not sure on how it's laid out. I do know it has 2 80mm fans, 1 front an rear, and the rear one is the loud one(if the puters loud, it's spinning, if it's not spinning, the puter's quiet), Hell, even not replacing, is it possible to volt mod it down a bit? Not comfortable working in a PS, and never done a voltmod of any kinda so kinda uncharted waters for me on two fronts.

It seems some people have been having problems with the fans cracking on these lately. Check that out first.

First thing to check is to see if it's doing this because of the fan's thermistor or if it's just a bad fan.

Turn the PC off for once and let it cool down. I know this may be torture, but go ahead and do it. Go out, see a movie, get a bite to eat, maybe take a nap. Sure, you'll miss some folds, but that's ok.

Now fire up the PC. Still as noisy? Cold, the fan should barely spin. If it's still noisy, I'd replace the fan. Just open up the PSU, cut the wires for the fan and butt-connect a new fan in it's place (if the PSU doesn't use a standard connector, which I don't think it does.)

Of course, the PSU is only a year old... I'd think it was still under warranty. No?

actually the PS is just over 1 month old, and I guess I wasn't clear on the volume thing. Under "light" usage(just watchin TV, playing an old game(I love old games), etc) the back fan doesn't spin at all, and thus it's quiet. If I'm playing my addiction(EQ, I know) with both screens running something(usually EQ and watchin TV), the PS will be quiet for a while, then get really loud, then quiet again for a while, then really loud. The PS is the only part of my puter that I can't check the internal temp using software, and everything else doesn't show a temp variation during the loud times(part of what lead me to thinkin the PS was the fan that's acting up to start.

As for the cracked fan, I'll look into that, it'll be really annoying if that's the issue after only one month though :(

If it's an on again, off again vibrating noise, it may not be a cracked fan (as that would be more consistant.) Just as bad, it could be a bad spindle. Either way, you're replacing the fan. ;)

That intake fan is on all the time on my 530w. There is a minor cooling flaw on these though - the intake fan is pressed up against the heatsinks, and no cooling gets to the components on the secondary side that need it. Thus, the fans start running faster than they could. Enough load on it, and those fans suddenly go from relatively quiet to very noticeable.

You'll get this unit running quieter by moving the intake fan to the other side of the sheet metal - helped mine a whole lot. Voids the warranty though ;)

Ahhh...didn't know the sound was coming and going. A cracked fan will usually get loud and then stay loud until it let's go
