hey all,

Ive got a really annoying problem with my PC at the moment. At times, when im using it normally, it would suddenly freeze, the whole thing, like i can't move the mouse, i can't ctrl - alt - del, nothing. My only option is to restart from the button. It gets really annoying especially when your working on an assignment, listening to music (stutters until restart ) etc. Sometimes, the same thing would happen, and after about 5 seconds being frozen, it would restart automatically.

Ive only thought of 2 reasons why it might occur: Driver issue or my Ext. HDD

I thought it might be a driver issue, ive since updated my BIOS, integrated audio drivers, graphics drivers, chipset drivers and have also reinstalled wireless drivers. Its still occuring. I also thought of the HDD, because when i copy my music from it, sometimes it would freeze half way through, needing a restart. Happens with Videos as well.

I got fed up once that i tried Ubuntu, and after some hours of use, and using the external HDD pretty extensively, i had no problems. That i think narrowed down the possibilty of it being a conflict in Windows, and not a hardware fault.

any ideas? thanks in advance!

EDIT: here are my specs

Windows XP professional w/sp2

AMD Opteron 170 at stock (2.0ghz)
1 gig ddr pc 3200 kingston
abit an8-sli fatality motherboard w/onboard audio chipset
nvidia 7800gt 256mb pci e
sound blaster live 24-bit
belkin 54g wireless card
160gb sata 2 Seagate

anyone?

the computer restarted by itself, and it said 'The System has recovered from a serious error'

this was the error code

BCCode : 9c BCP1 : 00000004 BCP2 : 8054D5F0 BCP3 : B2000000

ive googled it, and it turns out to be a conflict of drivers, however the thread articles i searched are pretty dated, so im not sure if newer driver revisions have fixed the problems...

also, ive done formats before hand, and the freezing has still come up, so i *think* its got something to do with the drivers
