Sucessor to Nikon D80?

I'm getting ready to pop down some money on a D-SLR, I'll probably pick up a film SLR at some point later, but for now just digital. The camera for me looks to be the D80, but I'm wondering if Nikon is going to release a new high-end consumer D-SLR on to the market any time soon. A hypothetical 'D90'? I thought for awhile about the D200, but since I already have SD cards and the D80 is versatile enough for my needs, I'd rather stick with the later.

Thanks,

I don't believe there is a D80 successor on the horizon rather a successor to the D200 may be closer.

I suspect though that the successor to the Canon 20D/30D will be out much sooner than that nikon.

The D80 came out less than a year ago, so it's a little too soon to be talking about its successor. It's possible we might see a refresh for the D80 (since Nikon seems to enjoy doing that now ;) ) but I wouldn't expect any announcements for a while, maybe not until the next Photokina or PMA convention.

We'll see a newer pro/semi-pro version (D3? D300?) before we'll see a major upgrade to the D70/D80 line, and then some of the changes will trickle down into this line (and then into the D40/D50 line).

Especially with the D40X now available.

I'm looking forward to the D3 myself. If it is enough of an upgrade, I'll pick one up for next summer.

If you are staying with Nikon, the D200 is a great camera...

I kinda figured that. I haven't been looking into cameras for very long, I wasn't very sure of their update/upgrade cycle. I might start looking more seriously at the D200.

The D200 and, D2X are going to be upgraded fairly soon. I have the D80 and, love it. Granted it took me a little longer to use to use it effectively. I came up from the D50 which is a great out of the box camera.

Good to hear you like the D80, Joves. I'd like to see a successor to the D200, though I'm not really desperate right now for a new camera, as I love my D70 so much. Not sure if I'd go for the D70/D80 line again, since I have a ton of CF memory and don't want to buy up another 10 GB in SD memory. Maybe the D300/D3 will get closer to solving the highlight clipping issue. One can only wish. :D
