Just got my first subwoofer, cause before i was just using small satelite speaker setups that didnt produce any bass. It says it isn't shielded which I know is bad cause crts are sensitive to magnets. My question is do non-shielded subs interfere with lcd monitors, cause my floor is carpet and it feels like its absorbing the sound from the sub. To resolve this i want to try my sub up top by on my desk, but dont want to put my monitor at risk.
Please and thank you for any input

First off, no LCDs aren't affected by magnets. BUT, what sub do you have. I don't think carpet should absorb sound that much, especially with a sub. Placement, though, is a big thing with subwoofers. It really depends on what you have though. If it's just a multimedia speaker setup, you generally want it under your desk, but if it's a large, powered home stereo type sub, the corner of the room might have more of an impact.

Not an audiophile nor am i a person strapped for cash, so saw these and cyber acoustics sounded like a descent brand.
Cyber Acoustics
Purchased those and i am descently pleased, cause my previous speakers went crazy and so only one speaker worked.

I think you just have a small sub that isn't very powerful. Try some different places around the area as there can be a dramatic difference in locations. Putting it in a corner does make it louder but it can also make it boomy/muddy.

Don't expect much from that 4".... 4" "subwoofer" ...... Man what were you thinking when you bought that! Should've came here asking for a list that can help you choose from... Anyways, try the corner... on the bottom..... putting it on top won't do much as far as getting more bass..... Anyways, I see that you're on a budget, and around that price, should've gotten these.

much bigger sub, 5.25 ported, cost the same thing. 2.1 ... for 20 more you can get the 5.1, but I am just sticking with the same price... This system will DEFINTELY give you MORE bass....IMO

Well thank you for all the information been really helpful, thinking of starting to put money away for a way improved 5.1 setup (got a good onboard sound card should probably put it to good use). :)
Putting it towards a corner did improve the situation temporarily

that's good. my last speaker setup before my z-5300e's (which I highly recommend for a 5.1 setup :D ) had a 4" sub, but it did surprisingly well. Cyber Acoustics is an awful brand though, so that's most likely where the problem lies.

As an aside, CA may be a not-so-good speaker brand, but their affordable 2.1 systems allowed me my first taste of a good sysytem - subwoofer and all. Now look what happened to me.

Damn you Cyber Acoustics... you opened the floodgates.

Hey do you have a big slide out printer drawer with your desk, basically any LARGE and SOLID semi-sealed enclosure in your room/desk (even a closet, but that may be inconvenient). This will increase the bass dramatically, although, like i said you need this to be solid. I've done this with a small, but quality 5.5" sub box with my small PC speakers and it gains easily 75% more bass. The woofer points towards the center of the desk, and is secured (jammed so it don't rattle) under the printer shelf of a pull out drawer(3' tall). Anyway, most people think its a 8" sub with at least 150Watts and it carries outside through closed window, so GIVE IT A TRY! Good Luck.

BTW the sub I have has very good low-end, sub-sonic bass extension, for a 5.5", I can get it to go to about 34Hz so that helps a lot. If your SUB is more PUNCHY, as in ROCK MUSIC/POP BASS versus RAP BASS than it may not work so well. Still worth a try!

34hz is very difficult to achieve with the amount of air your woofer is pushing. Though I doubt your claims of 34hz extension, I'll give you the benefit of doubt.

Have you tried running infrasonic test tones on your system? Something like Bass Mechanik should do. Just download some tones, run it, report back. 34hz is hard to hit.

I have the two disc Bass Mekanik Power Tools set. If you are interested in doing some testing, give me a pm or use aim ( ironpike01) and i'm sure i could facilitate the right Hz track in 320kbps 44.1khz .

ya know, i decided when i got my new car that i would tone it down a bit with the car audio, and not worry about putting a sub in this time, but hot damn... second thoughts - i just love that feeling when those low sonics rattle your innards.. good stuff, Above Poster
