this is computer related (since im hooking it up to my pc). i have a phillips surround stereo, and it has a subwoofer out on the back. im wondering if i could just hook up a speaker that has good bass to it and use it as a subwoofer, or would i have to get a self-amplified unit?
 
Hook up that speaker to a spare amp channel, and then change your surround settings to multi-channel stereo. Most receivers have a big pile of different DSP settings for multichannel stereo, pick the one you like the best.
