Subwoofer Cable Help

Hey guys...I just bought a new Electrohome Subwoofer audio cable rca to rca...and hooked up my klipsch sub to my Harmon Kardon reciever. So the cable goes from my subwoofer pre-out on my reciever to the black line in input on my sub.

The problem I am getting is when I turn off my reciever (thats completly off not on standby) after a couple of minutes my subwoofer starts to make a very quiet low end hum. With my prior oldschool rca cable I didn't have this problem at all. Can anyone shed some light to what might be the problem...thanks.

You're using a y-cable at the sub-side, right?

no...I am only using the left rca in the sub...not both right and left. its a single subwoofer rca cable.

? Why doesn't your sub have a dedicated input for the sub channel? Look at the back of my sub:

LINE IN/SUB IN.

weird i have the same issue with my older sony receiver...i've tried using stereo rca and just one rca connected but it has always done this...you'll get used to it

Some subs (my 15" DefTec and my Velodyne 10") REQUIRE a y splitter to go into the sub if it has both a left and right RCA in. I'm not saying this will solve your problem, but it'll make a heluva difference in sound if your subs is like mine are.

Thanks for all the help guys...and a little more insight to my sub. So the input on the back is called Line Level and it has a left and right (black and red) plug...which is just a rca input. In the manual it shows that if I use an rca cable from my reciever subwoofer output...it should plug into the left channel rca on my sub input.

My sub also has High Level in which uses speaker wire but I prefer to use line in rca cables. Anyways my main point was just to narrow down why it would be making this low end hum only when I turn off my reciever.

My Gale Storm has a L/R rca and the single input for the sub is the L (white) channel. No problems with that at all.

most likely you are getting electical noise/interferace. You have a high quality 75ohm cable I hope? How long is your run?

if not - and it's a cheap cable - head to www.monoprice.com and buy a nice quality 75ohm subwoofer cable. Don't get 50ohm (standard red and white style cable) Yellow jack cable is 75 ohm (video composite cable)


Digital coax cable is also 75ohm.

I already have an extra Digital Coaxial cable I bought a couple months back but never used it...its an Ion Cable brand but they seem to work really well, as I have my s/pdif out from my computer going to my reciever with one of the cables. I never thought I could use a Digital Coaxial cable for hooking up my sub...lol. I'm going to give that a try right now.

I had the same issue with an RCA brand cable and the reason was because I didn't realize the cable ends have locking ends and had to unscrew them then tighten them when connected. No more hum for me.
