Wondered if any of you had played this game? It's one of the oldest MMO games still running. I believe it was created in 1994, in the basement of the guy who created/helped create Kazaa, and Skype (Priitk).

Anyway, it's an asteroid style shooter, except you play against other ships. There's 8 different kinds and many different zones and settings to play in. I've been playing it for over a decade, and some people since beta '94. It's not often you find a game people play for that long.

It was originally a game by Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE) I think, who released it as a paid game, but it died soon after, the game creator put up his own money to keep servers online and let the community take over handling the game.

Anyway, if you wanna check it out, it's free these days and only 7.8mb. Highly addictive. http://www.ssgn.net.

Here's the old VIE SS intro video from way back when :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YwXzq_OwZI. And lastly, here's a screenshot.

I hope you guys enjoy this game. If you do decide to check it out. I am a System Operator in a zone called "SSCX Chaos/League". I fly under the name "Disturbance". Come in and type "?find Disturbance" to see if I am online, and if I am type ":Disturbance: Hi, I came here from OCUK." and i'll show you around.

Used to play it years ago. Might load it up just for some quick fun.

I played this a lot back in 1998. It ran great over a 56k. I remember using bombers in dogfights to 1 shot fighters. There was probably plenty of lag, but I' m guessing since you moved around with a lot of momentum and shots were projectile, that you just could anticipate really well where they would be.

I never thought of it as an MMO though; how large is the player count in big maps now?

Wasn't this game featured on one of the later episodes of The Computer Chronicles?
