A nuisance I found is if I click User CP, and look at the subscribed threads and then log out. When I relogin, the subscribed threads are gone without even looking at the threads. They only reappear if someone else posts to the thread.

The main problem is sometimes the forum automatically logs me out, and then I have to manually look for the threads. I already know I can simply list all the subscribed threads here, but I shouldn’t have to do that.

Edit: For clarification, I know the newly subscribed threads are supposed to disappear when you view the threads, but they disappear when I don't even have a chance to look at the threads.

Don't log out. Leave your rig running and a browser window looged in to [H]ard 24.7 :D

(Or at least until you've viewed the subscribed threads you're so passionate about seeing ;))

The [H] is going through some issues and are deleting threads they don't like.

When you say the forum logs you out, have you got the "Remember Me" box checked?

To ask the obvious- are you clicking through the "view all subscribed threads" link in your CP?

You misread my first post. The main problem is sometimes the forum automatically logs me out.

No, I'll try that.

Did you misread my first post as well?

I just tried that. It doesn't work. Perhaps the forum automatically logs me off when I'm inactive for some period of time like when I'm browsing through other websites.

The behaviour you are describing is just part of the way the forum software works. Yes, the forum is probably configured to have a fixed period for your 'session' logged in. If you use your browser's "Remember" feature for your login details that won't pose a problem, because when you visit the site (or refresh the page or whatever) you'll be automatically logged back in.

The problem of identifying new posts in subscribed threads only exists for you because you're approaching the task the wrong way. If you want to know when new posts have been made to your subscribed threads then make the necessary configuration change in your User Control Panel. Set notification of new posts in subscribed threads to "Instant email notification" and leave your email client running and periodically checking for new mail. Create a 'Message Rule' so that new mail from [H]ard goes into a folder in your email Inbox.

It's not necessarily a cookie problem creating the 'marked as read' issue. There are numerous ways that can occur.

If, for example, a person clicks on a link which opens a different forum thread in a new tab or browser window, and then closes that new tab or window before viewing all the 'unread' messages in the original window, the messages will end up marked as 'read'.

Scenarios such as that one aren't 'cookie problems'. They are simply instances of exceeding the capabilities of what the forum software can cope with. If somebody wants to ensure they see all the 'unread' messages in threads which interest them then relying on the 'unread messages' icons is second-best approach. Adding thread subscriptions and using instant email notification of new messages in subscribed threads is the ONLY foolproof method, for ANY forum software!

Sorry I was referring to this:

When I meant it was a cookie problem.

Regarding why the threads are marked as read, it will do that after a certain amount of time as well, if you have been registered as logged in a certain amount of time since the last post in a thread was made, yet haven't read it, the forum basically thinks you no longer care about the thread, and mark it as read. If its a limitation, or feature, who knows, but thats what it does.

I have seen forums that remember your setting for every thread, so it can be done, but requires more overhead than VB does.

For example...

I can login, open up the subscribed page, see XX number of new messages, wait 15 mins or so, refresh the page, and they will all be shown as read. This happens sometimes when I login from home, but don't finish reading threads before I leave for work.

..requires more overhead..

That's the key right there. Overhead. A 'busy' board like this one needs to remain functional, so not every desire of every user can be met.

email notification is an 'overhead' too. Sometimes 'instant' notification of new messages can be delayed a fair while after new messages have appeared. But at least you get them, even when that happens. The 'instant' part doesn't need to be literally met. A forum board is a forum board. It's not a chat channel, and not designed for real-time conversations.

I hope I'm just reading your message wrong, but I do agree with you, I'm not saying its wrong or anything, just trying to explain why it does what it does.

,,just trying to explain why it does what it does.

Me too! :D

(That's another 'feature' of message boards. People often assume, when somebody responds to their comment, that the person must necessarily be disagreeing with them!)

LOL!

Hehehe just used to the video card forums where most threads turn into a debate :p ;)

The purpose of this particuliar forum is to report problems. Once it turns into a conversational discussion it is out of the bounds of that purpose.

As near as I can tell, that's just how vBulletin works. "Subscribed threads" in your control panel isn't really showing you threads with unread posts, just threads with new posts since you last visited the control panel.
