I was bored today and was looking at submerged PC cooling that people have done with mineral oil and got to thinking, so I thought I would ask a question before I got bored and played with it with an OLD PC I have sitting in a dark corner lol. I was wondering if anyone had tried using a large water cooling radiator and a stronger pump to cool the oil instead of letting it just soak in its own heat or by using something crazy big like they show on Puget Systems website? I didn't have any luck searching around the web so I figured I would ask here.
 
Yep. I know that Braineater sent it through a custom cooled TEC array, which worked alright.

I'd expect one of those 9x120mm rads to do wonders for your oil temps.
 
You know, we use that computer every day...our Lead Support Technician uses it as his primary system. The outside of the aquarium gets a little warm to the touch, but we've never had thermal issues with it. I believe that heatsink is a Freezer 7.

We've had several people duplicate that build, with varying degrees of success. If you'd like to give us a call, I can put you in touch with the technician who designed it so that you can pick his brain. There's also a long standing thread on our forums about the system. :)
 
Really? Do you have the link to the thread? Sounds like a great read and it might be fun to do and make for a great conversation piece.
 
(in fact, some cite that there is a hole in the hard drive casing, designed to allow pressure differences to equalize)

This was in the FAQ on one of those pages and then mentioned in a few posts that I skimmed through.

Perhaps I'm wrong but I doubt that the hard drive isn't air tight (and therefore watertight)... and that the hole probably just leads to a rubber diaphragm if they wanted to equalize pressure.

None of the people on the site had any references.. and I can't find anything online. If anyone has any links, please provide..

I've got an amazing idea for a pseudo submerged computer that I might enact later this summer if I get some time off. I'll probably be duplicating your build a tiny bit, but adding other components such as refridgeration of a coolant system to suppliment cooling to the major heat producing areas.

Would you mind if, I too, possibly took you up on your offer?
 
I wouldn't mind at all. We get people calling in and stopping by all the time to see the system, and we've had people replicate it and send us photos. Just call into the main number and tell the person who answers that you have questions about the submerged system.
 
the most important thing in this kinda setup is to move the oil around, and i mean move it, not bubbling it up, that is no way near as efficient as a good propeller ;)
 
Still the best one I've seen to date was back in ~2000 when some guys submerged a 366MHz Celeron in fluorinert which was pumped through a rad submerged in liquid nitrogen. Fluorinert will set you back a mighty pretty penny though...

That would be the guys at OC Tools. They also did a follow up that September.
 
Actually , it would depend on what type of brake fluid it was :

DOT2 and DOT5 would be fine....DOT3,4 would be bad.

The mineral oil does get murky after a year or so. I'm going to take a guess and say that dyes and chemicals on the components themselves eventually leach out into the oil, making it a little cloudy.

Still, 1-2 years between oil changes. Don't you wish your car got that much mileage? :D
 
You will find the 'murkyness' is a result of a)dyes (+1 e points :D ) , b) adhesive and adhesive solvents , and c) plasticizers from the plastic and rubber bits, including all of the wiring.

After 4 months , my Midel7131 had oxidized quite a bit as a result of leaching plasticizers from the (mostly wiring) in my tank.

While mineral oil and midel7131 have differing compatibility charts , 99% of the time , oil +plastic=bad.

The wiring from the psu to the mobo on the thinktank , that was submerged , broke apart like hard plastic.
