If you added a powered sub without an amp, could it still get loud? maybe 100-120dB?

Add it to what? And a powered sub, by definition, has an amplifier. You wouldn't feed it an amplified signal anyway. And loudness is totally dependent on the sub and the sub's amplifier.

decibels is based on the room volume and quality of the sound. Getting 100 dbs is not easy with a computer sub. It would need to be something rather substantial. However there are lots of subs that will work. However they all have an AMP if they are powered. You will need a cable that goes from 1/16th to rca for most powered amps.

You may need to look at something that can do 100 db (realistically) by looking at some nousaine charts.

subs that can:

SVS 25-31, 20-39, 16-46 NSD powered versions
Hsu VTF-2 or 3
etc..

well you could get a couple of 12's for a car like alpine or mmats or menphis and get a jl audio amp for it and some dc to ac power adapters. and a headphone to rca splitter and that would do it

Why get something intended for a completely different application when he could just get a sub designed for the intended application?

btw, just for reference, the difference to 100 and 120db is A LOT.

Like, a lot lot.

like, take 100db, get 32x as much power, and you don't have 120db...

This part here makes the whole endeavor not worth it imho, in addition to other drawbacks mentioned, and unmentioned.

OP, maybe you ought to list the parts you already own, and list your budget $ for add-ons. This way we can help you figure something out.

What is stopping him from using pro-audio or subwoofer specific amplifiers instead of ghetto rigged crappy car amplifiers? And it would probably sound like crap with car subwoofers anyway.

By nature, a sub must be powered to produce sound. If you took an SVS CS series subwoofer and just stuck it in a room, it wouldn't produce any sound. You have to connect it to an amplifier for it to work...
