sub $120 GPU folder

An nVidia GPU will get you more PPD then the ATI cards (with GPU2)

Under $125, you could get a GT 240, 9800 GT, GT 220, GTS 250, 9800 GTX+

Others here will know which gpu is better, but those look like your options for New cards.

The FS forums may also get you a higher card for less $$.
 
You might be able to find a used GTX260 192SP for that price. If you can, that would be the best option. Otherwise, a used GTS 250 or 9800GTX+ would be the best option.

the GTX 260 216 cores between 6k-7500 stock clock.. so id expect the 192sp version to be a little lower.. but im sure you could find a used gtx 260 216 core for pretty cheap now on the forum since a ton of people have moved to the HD5870.. might be worth putting up a WTB thread in the F/S section and see if anyone bites..


but for the price the GTS 250/9800GTX+ are pretty decent.. especially if you overclock the snot out of them.. just look around the F/S section of the forum see what prices you can find.. its really not worth buying these older cards at retail prices anymore..
 
GTX260, GTS250, GT240 each one does approx 1000-1200ppd less than the model above it at stock speeds using a 353 pointer as a benchmark. But each also has less and less power requirements which may or may not be a consideration depending upon the power supply in a particular box or one's budget.

Rule #1; Make sure your PSU can handle whatever is throw at it

If you can afford from the FS section a GTX260, by far your best bet. At $120, it shouldnt be to hard. And you can see some good PPD results from that alone. As The_Heretic stated, they drop down about 1200ppd each per model, so a 260 (non-core) will rack in about 7700PPD, a 250 racks in just over 6K.

There are some cards that dont require an extra power connection if you PSU doesnt have one, at that a 240 isnt bad, can rack in a little over 4K on its own as well (Thats a possibility, you may have to OC the card to reach 4K).
 
Wow, thanks for all the info guys. As for the PSU it's a Antec True Power 2 550W so i'm not worried about it handling it. It ran my 2gb 4890 Vapor X with no probs :) That being said, i'm going to try a sweetheart of a deal on the 260 216
 
Like Zero posted, your best bet is to locate a used card. That way you can pick something up that is faster for your budget. I bought most of my cards second hand.

Oh i totally agree, i'm a big fan of used stuff, i usually only buy new hardware when i can't find what i want used ;)

ya i'd really like to find a sweet deal on a 260 216
 
Keep an eye out for a good used GTX 260 216sp. Otherwise, for the money the GTS 250 can't be beat. It overclocks like crazy and just churns out the work. I have both and they keep my ppd high while my i7 works on bigadv!
 
I like my GTS250.

It's in my HTPC and has a HDMI port on it. I get good ppd out of it and stable as a rock.
